Tasting Notes

Vibrant bright purple in the glass, with ripe blueberries, plum, black cherry and a hint of violets. The palate is full-bodied and softly sparkling, bringing fleshy dark fruit, mulberry, sweet spice and liquorice lift. It has a medium-sweet feel from the dosage and fruit weight, but the bubbles and chill-friendly serving style keep it lively rather than heavy.

Winemaking

Wanderer is made from organically grown red wine grapes from the Bosworth family vineyard. The red grapes are gently picked, crushed and open fermented, then pressed off skins and sent to stainless steel. Some Shiraz parcels spend time in oak, while others remain unoaked, giving the non-vintage base wine both freshness and complexity. Joch Bosworth then selects the final blend before the second stage adds the fizz.

Vineyard & Vintage

This non-vintage sparkling red is made from a blend of predominantly Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, with small seasonal additions possible depending on the base wines available. The fruit comes from the Bosworth family’s certified organic McLaren Vale vineyard, established in the early 1970s and certified organic since 1999. The wine is 14.0% ABV, with approximately 14 g/L residual sugar, 1.4 g sugar per 100mL and 78 calories per 100mL.

Why We Love It

This is the bottle for anyone who loves the nostalgia and joy of sparkling red but wants a fresher, organically grown version. It has the blue and black fruit, fizz and festive generosity that make sparkling reds so much fun, yet it still feels polished enough for food. Serve it chilled and it becomes a surprisingly versatile bottle for summer barbecues, winter roasts and Christmas tables.

Food Pairing

With blueberries, plum, black cherry, sweet spice and fizz, this sparkling red suits rich, salty and celebratory food. It is brilliant with turkey, ham, barbecue meats, sausage pasta, mushroom dishes, hard cheese and spicy-sweet sauces.

Cellaring

Producer

Spring Seed Wine Co is part of the Bosworth family’s McLaren Vale wine story, based at 92 Gaffney Road in Willunga. The vineyard was established in the early 1970s by Peter and Anthea Bosworth and is now run by Joch Bosworth and Louise Hemsley-Smith. Joch began converting the vineyard to organic viticulture in 1995, and the vines have been certified organic since 1999. Spring Seed’s labels are inspired by vintage flower seed packets, matching the wines’ colourful, approachable and organically grown character.

FAQ

What does Spring Seed Wanderer Sparkling Red NV taste like?

It tastes rich, fruity and gently sparkling, with blueberries, plum, black cherry, violets, mulberry, sweet spice and liquorice. The palate is full-bodied for a sparkling wine, with fleshy dark fruit and a lively bead. Serve it chilled to keep the fruit bright and the finish fresh.

Is this sparkling red dry or sweet?

This wine sits in a medium-sweet sparkling profile, with approximately 14 g/L residual sugar. The fruit and bubbles make it feel generous rather than sugary. It is sweeter and fuller than dry sparkling rosé or Prosecco, but not a dessert wine.

What is the body, acidity and bubble style like?

The body is full for sparkling wine, with moderate acidity and soft, lively bubbles. It has more tannin and dark fruit than a white sparkling, because it is made from red grapes. The chilled serving temperature keeps the palate balanced and refreshing.

Does this wine contain preservatives or sulphites?

This is a certified organic sparkling red, not a No Added Preservative wine. It may contain sulphites, as most wines do, and organic wines are made to lower allowable sulphur limits than conventional wines. It is certified organic and vegan suitable.

How should I serve Spring Seed Wanderer Sparkling Red?

Serve well chilled at around 6–8°C. Use a sparkling wine glass or a large wine glass if you want more aroma. No decanting is needed, and keep the bottle cold between pours.

What food pairs well with this sparkling red?

It pairs beautifully with Christmas turkey, baked ham, barbecue sausages, sausage and tomato pasta, roast duck, hard cheese and mushroom dishes. The bubbles refresh richer foods, while the dark fruit suits sweet-savoury sauces. For a vegetarian match, try portobello mushroom steaks or mushroom and lentil pie.

Can this sparkling red be cellared?

It can be held short-term, but it is best enjoyed while the fruit and bubbles are lively. Drink now to 2028 for the freshest blueberry, plum and black cherry characters. Store it somewhere cool, dark and stable.

Is Spring Seed Wanderer Sparkling Red vegan friendly?

Yes, this wine is vegan suitable. It is also certified organic and made from the Bosworth family’s McLaren Vale vineyard. It is a fun choice for shared tables where you want an organic sparkling that feels different from standard bubbles.

Who will enjoy this wine the most?

This is ideal for drinkers who enjoy sparkling red, chilled red wine and generous McLaren Vale fruit. If you like sparkling Shiraz, softer red blends or festive sparkling red wine, this will suit you well. It is fuller and darker than Prosecco or sparkling rosé.

Is this wine keto friendly?

This wine has approximately 14 g/L residual sugar and 1.4 g sugar per 100mL, so it is not the driest sparkling option. It may suit moderate low-sugar drinkers, but strict keto customers may prefer a drier sparkling wine. Alcohol still contributes calories, so enjoy it mindfully as part of your broader plan.
