About Cantine Ermes
Cantine Ermes is a Sicilian wine cooperative with a powerful story behind it. Founded in 1998 in the Belìce Valley, between Gibellina and Santa Ninfa, it grew from a region rebuilt after the devastating 1968 earthquake. Today, Cantine Ermes brings together growers working across Mediterranean vineyards where sunshine, sea breeze and sustainable farming help create wines with freshness, flavour and a strong sense of place.
The Cantine Ermes wines we stock come from the Vento di Mare range, a name that translates to “wind from the sea”. These are relaxed, organic Italian wines with a sunny Sicilian heart — generous enough to enjoy on their own, but fresh and savoury enough to work beautifully with food.
Where Is Cantine Ermes From?
Cantine Ermes began in the Belìce Valley in western Sicily, an area shaped by warm days, fertile soils and winds that move from the sea towards the inland hills. This natural airflow is part of what gives the Vento di Mare wines their balance: ripe Mediterranean fruit, freshness, structure and that lovely savoury edge that makes Sicilian wines so appealing at the table.
Organic, Biodynamic or Sustainable Farming
The Vento di Mare wines are made from organically grown grapes, with Cantine Ermes recognised as an important organic producer in Sicily. The broader cooperative also places strong emphasis on sustainability across its production, including recovered water, reduced waste and lower CO₂ impact. It is a practical, large-scale approach to better farming and responsible wine production.

What Makes Cantine Ermes Different?
Cantine Ermes is not a tiny boutique estate, and that is part of its strength. It is a grower-led cooperative with deep agricultural roots, giving many farming families a pathway to produce better wine from a region with a difficult but resilient history. The wines are generous, clean and approachable, but they still carry plenty of Sicilian personality — citrus and salt in the whites, dark fruit and spice in the reds.
What Is Cantine Ermes Known For?
For us, Cantine Ermes is best known for the Vento di Mare wines: organic Sicilian bottles that are easy to love and easy to pair. The Grillo brings citrus, tropical fruit and a salty mineral line, while the Nero d’Avola shows black cherry, plum, smoky spice and soft tannins. They are the kind of wines that make a weeknight dinner feel a little more Mediterranean.
Why We Love Cantine Ermes
Cantine Ermes offers that rare combination of organic credentials, real regional character and excellent value. These wines are generous without being heavy, fresh without being sharp, and versatile enough for the way people actually drink wine — with dinner, with friends, outside on a warm evening, or alongside a simple plate of pasta. They bring a little Sicilian sunshine into the glass, without overcomplicating things.
Food & Cuisine Pairing Ideas
The Vento di Mare Grillo is a natural match for seafood, grilled prawns, lemony salads, zucchini fritters, fresh herbs and salty cheeses. The Nero d’Avola is made for tomato-based pasta, eggplant parmigiana, mushroom ragu, roasted capsicum, grilled lamb or a simple pizza night. Both wines lean into Mediterranean food beautifully — olive oil, herbs, citrus, tomatoes, seafood and chargrilled vegetables.
Who Will Enjoy These Wines?
Cantine Ermes is a great choice for anyone who wants organic wine with flavour, freshness and value. Choose the Grillo if you usually enjoy crisp whites like Vermentino, Pinot Grigio or dry Sauvignon Blanc. Choose the Nero d’Avola if you like smooth, medium-bodied reds such as Montepulciano, Grenache, Tempranillo or softer Shiraz styles.
