Expect a perfumed lift of violets, then blackberry and blueberry, sweet clove spice and a flicker of anise. It’s rich and full-bodied, but the tannins bring a refreshing dryness that keeps it balanced and food-ready.

Tasting Notes

Perfumed and vibrant on the nose: violets up front, then blackberry and blueberry, sweet clove spice and a hint of anise. The palate is rich and full-bodied, but it never feels sticky—prominent natural tannins bring a refreshing dryness that balances the plush fruit. Long, dark varietal purity on the finish, with that “primal” energy you only really get from wines bottled young and without additions.

Winemaking

This is where the natural story is more than a label. Each batch is destemmed into open-top fermenters and native yeast fermented on skins for around 7–14 days, with hand pump-overs twice daily. After natural malolactic fermentation and settling, the blend is bottled promptly in stainless tank, unoaked, and without sulphur dioxide to capture the vintage’s brightness and primacy.

Vineyard & Vintage

From Kalleske’s family vineyard in Greenock, Barossa Valley—multiple Shiraz blocks blended (vines planted from 1905 through to 1998) for a true snapshot of the season. The 2025 growing season was warm and dry with significant spring frosts and lower yields, leading to an early harvest and intensely flavoured fruit.

Food Pairing

Big flavour loves big food—especially anything with char, spice or slow-cooked richness. The dry tannin line makes it brilliant with protein, while the floral lift keeps it surprisingly good with peppery or herby flavours.

Mood or occasion to match this wine…

A “feed the people” red: BBQ smoke in the air, big platter energy, and a bottle that tastes alive—bold, juicy, and unapologetically itself.

Cellaring

Designed to be enjoyed young for its vibrant, primal character. If you do cellar, keep it short term (around 2–5 years) and expect the fruit to mellow into more savoury territory.

Producer

FAQ

Is Kalleske Zeitgeist Shiraz 2025 a natural wine?

Yes—it's listed as natural wine and wild yeast fermented, made without non-grape additives and bottled without sulphur dioxide. It’s also certified organic and biodynamic, and vegan suitable.

Why is it called Zeitgeist?

Zeitgeist is a German word meaning “the spirit of the time”. For this wine, it’s Kalleske’s way of bottling the feel of the vintage as purely as possible—wild fermented, bottled young, unoaked and without sulphur dioxide—so you taste the season’s personality, not winemaking additions.

What does it taste like?

Expect violets, blackberry and blueberry, sweet clove spice and a hint of anise. It’s full-bodied and rich, but finishes dry and fresh thanks to prominent, integrated tannins.

Is it preservative free?

Yes—this is a no added preservative wine, made without added sulphites.

Is it oaky?

No. Zeitgeist is made to be unoaked and bottled young, so the flavour is all about vibrant, primary Shiraz fruit rather than barrel influence.

Should I decant it?

If you love the “primal” lift, you can pour straight away. If you want it a touch smoother, a quick 20–30 minutes in a decanter (or a big glass) will soften the edges and open the aromatics.

Can I chill it?

You can—especially in warmer weather. Try 10–15 minutes in the fridge to brighten the fruit and make the tannins feel extra snappy.

How long will it keep once opened?

Because it’s no added sulphites, it’s best enjoyed sooner rather than later. Recork and refrigerate, and aim to finish within 1–2 days for peak freshness.

Who will love it most?

If you like bold Shiraz but prefer it clean, raw and additive-free—with floral lift, dark fruit and a dry tannin backbone—this one’s for you.
