Tasting Notes
Deep, inky purple-black in the glass, Zeitgeist opens with vivid plum, dark mulberry and black cherry. Violet florals, red liquorice and cinnamon spice lift the fruit, while a subtle note of milk chocolate adds richness.
The palate is powerful and full-bodied, with primary fruit flowing through every layer. Rich natural tannins provide impressive structure, yet the wine remains plush and generous. Energetic, deeply flavoured and beautifully balanced, it builds to a long finish filled with lingering dark fruit.
Why We Love It
Zeitgeist captures Shiraz at its most immediate and vibrant. There is no oak maturation to soften or shape the fruit, allowing the colour, aroma and flavour of the 2026 harvest to take centre stage.
It combines the intensity of Barossa Shiraz with genuine freshness and energy. The fruit is bold and concentrated, while violet florals, cinnamon and liquorice give the wine definition and aromatic lift. It is a preservative-free red with depth, structure and serious personality.
Winemaking
The Shiraz was harvested from 12 March to 1 April 2026. Individual vineyard parcels were destemmed into open-top fermenters and wild fermented for seven to fourteen days on skins, with hand pump-overs performed twice daily.
After pressing, a portion of each batch was transferred to stainless steel to create the Zeitgeist blend. The wine completed natural malolactic fermentation before settling and being bottled young without oak maturation or added sulphur dioxide.
This minimal-intervention approach preserves the primary fruit, deep colour and distinctive character of the vintage.
Vineyard & Vintage
Zeitgeist is made from a cross-section of Shiraz grown throughout the Kalleske family’s certified organic and biodynamic estate at Greenock in the Barossa Valley. The blend draws on multiple vineyard blocks planted between 1905 and 1998.
The low-yielding vines grow predominantly in shallow sandy soils over deep clay subsoil. The same vineyard blocks also contribute fruit to Kalleske’s Eduard, Greenock, Moppa and Clarry’s wines.
The 2026 vintage combined a slightly wetter-than-average winter and spring with one of the driest and warmest summers on record. The early moisture supported healthy vine growth, while the warm summer concentrated flavour and colour.
Rain at the end of February refreshed the vines before mild and steady conditions through March and April supported even ripening and extended hang time. Yields were lower, producing deeply coloured Shiraz with rich fruit, natural structure and excellent balance.
Food Pairing
The vivid dark fruit, rich tannins and complete absence of oak make Zeitgeist a flexible match for chargrilled meat, smoky barbecue flavours, richly spiced dishes, roast vegetables and hearty plant-based meals.

Producer
Kalleske is a seventh-generation family-owned winery based at Greenock in the Barossa Valley. The family has farmed the property since 1853, with brothers Troy and Tony Kalleske continuing the tradition of growing and making wine entirely from their own estate vineyards.
The vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic, with farming centred on healthy soils, biodiversity and long-term resilience. Synthetic herbicides and systemic chemical treatments are avoided, while composting, grazing animals and biodynamic preparations support a balanced vineyard ecosystem.
Zeitgeist means the spirit or defining character of a particular time. The wine was created to capture the distinctive qualities of each vintage through fresh, unoaked Shiraz bottled without added sulphur dioxide.
