Kalleske Stryker Petit Verdot: Tasting Notes

WINE STYLE → Floral, savoury & structured

A medium-full bodied Petit Verdot with lifted aromatics, savoury detail and a tightly framed palate. Blueberry, cassis, cherry, heritage rose, Darjeeling tea, pepper medley and a herbal briar edge rise first, giving the wine both perfume and complexity. The palate is fresh and structured, with crunchy red and blue fruits, a dark fruit undercurrent and fine minerally tannins that read almost rusty steel in character. Chalky tannins return on the finish, carrying the wine long and smooth. It is balanced, varietal and quietly distinctive.

Tasting Notes

Stryker 2023 is a varietal Petit Verdot with more aromatic lift than many examples of the grape. Blueberry, cassis, cherry, heritage rose, Darjeeling tea, pepper medley and a herbal briar edge make the nose detailed and layered. The palate is medium-full bodied, fresh and structured, with crunchy red and blue fruits and a darker fruit core building through the middle. Fine minerally tannins feel almost rusty steel in nature, then chalky tannins return on the finish. The end result is long, smooth and well balanced rather than simply forceful.

Winemaking

The grapes were harvested on 4 May and destemmed into an open-top fermenter. Hand pump-overs were carried out morning and night, and the must was wild yeast fermented on skins for 10 days at a cool 14–24°C. At dryness, the wine was drained and pressed, then settled before being filled to seasoned French oak hogsheads. Natural malolactic fermentation took place in barrel, and the wine was matured for a full year before bottling.

Vineyard & Vintage

Stryker comes from a single Petit Verdot vineyard on the Kalleske property at Moppa. The hand-pruned vines are low yielding and planted in shallow sand over clay subsoil, a site that suits the variety’s structure and depth. Kalleske describes 2023 as the longest and latest vintage on record, with a wet cool spring, average summer temperatures and slow steady ripening through autumn. Those conditions produced good yields and excellent quality, which shows here in the wine’s balance and detail.

Why We Love It

This is a strong example of Petit Verdot as a stand-alone varietal rather than just a blending component. It has the expected colour, tannin and depth, but it also carries floral lift, tea-like savouriness and a neat mineral line. For drinkers who like structured reds with something a little different from Cabernet or Shiraz, it makes a convincing case for the grape.

Food Pairing

The tannin and savoury detail make this a natural match for grilled meats, slow-cooked dishes and earthy vegetarian plates. It works best with food that can handle its structure without overpowering the more floral and tea-like notes. Try matching this wine with →

Mood or occasion to match this wine…

A good choice for cooler evenings, proper dinners and occasions where a structured red with savoury detail will suit better than a softer fruit-led style.

Cellaring

Kalleske says Stryker can be enjoyed now or over the next decade. The tannin, fruit concentration and balanced structure all support that timeframe.

Producer

Kalleske is a seventh-generation family estate at Greenock in the Barossa Valley, farming continuously since 1853. The vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic, and all fruit is estate grown. Stryker takes its name from the blacksmith’s assistant, a nod to family memories of Tony, Kym and Troy helping their grandfather Clarry in the blacksmith shop on cold days by the warmth of the furnace. Like the rest of the range, it is made with practical traditional methods — wild fermentation, hand pump-overs and barrel maturation — while still letting site and variety lead.

FAQ

What does Kalleske Stryker Petit Verdot taste like?

It shows blueberry, cassis, cherry, heritage rose, Darjeeling tea, pepper medley and a herbal briar edge. The palate is medium-full bodied and structured, with crunchy fruit, minerally tannins and a long smooth finish.

Is this wine dry?

Yes, it is a dry red wine. The residual sugar is about 1 g/L, so it finishes firmly dry.

How full-bodied is it?

This sits in the medium-full bodied range. It has real depth and tannin, but it is not as broad or heavy as the biggest reds in the Kalleske range.

Does it need decanting?

A short decant helps. Around 20 to 30 minutes gives the floral, tea and dark-fruit notes more room to open.

What temperature and glassware work best?

Serve it at around 16–18°C in a large red wine glass. That helps soften the tannin and allows the aromatic detail to show more clearly.

Can this wine be cellared?

Yes. Kalleske recommends drinking it now or over the next decade, which suits the wine’s structure and balance well.

Does this wine contain preservatives or sulphites?

It is not a No Added Preservative wine, so it does contain sulphites. Some occur naturally during fermentation, and certified organic and biodynamic wines are made under lower permitted sulphite levels than conventional wines.

Is this wine vegan friendly?

Yes, it is listed as vegan suitable. It is also certified organic and certified biodynamic.

What food works best with this wine?

It works well with lamb, beef stews, roasted beetroot and earthy dishes with herbs or mushrooms. The tannin and savoury edge suit protein and depth.

Who is this wine likely to suit?

It will suit drinkers who enjoy structured reds with floral aromatics, dark fruit and fine tannins. If you like Cabernet, Petit Verdot or darker alternative reds with a savoury edge, this is a strong fit.
