Kalleske Buckboard Durif: Tasting Notes
WINE STYLE → Big, Bold & Beautiful
A powerful, full-bodied Barossa Durif with inky colour, dark fruit weight and plenty of structure. Violets, baked fruit cake, cherry ripe, plum, sarsaparilla and sage flower lead the aromatics, backed by toasty oak. The palate is rich and concentrated, with intense dark fruits, chalky grippy tannins and notes of dark chocolate, smoke and coffee from barrel maturation. It is a big wine, but the fruit, oak and tannin stay in balance through a long, firmly built finish.

Tasting Notes
Buckboard is unapologetically full scale. The nose opens with violets and dark confection notes, then moves into baked fruit cake, cherry ripe, plum, sarsaparilla and sage flower. On the palate it is dense and flavoursome, with concentrated black and blue fruit framed by classic Durif tannin — prominent, chalky and mouth-coating, but handled well. Oak is much more visible here than in CCCLXV, bringing dark chocolate, smoke and coffee notes that sit over the fruit rather than hiding it. The finish is long, firm and powerful.
Winemaking
The fruit was picked on 5 April 2023 and destemmed into open-top fermenters. Wild fermentation ran for eight days on skins with hand pump-overs twice daily, before pressing into American oak hogsheads. Around 25% of the barrels were new, with the balance in seasoned oak. Natural malolactic fermentation took place in barrel, and the wine was matured for a full year before bottling. It is a traditional, oak-led approach that suits the scale and tannin profile of Durif.
Vineyard & Vintage
Buckboard comes from a single Kalleske vineyard on the family property at Greenock in the north-western Barossa. The vines are hand-pruned, low-yielding and planted in shallow sandy loam over deep red clay, a strong site for building concentration and structure. The 2023 season was the longest and latest on record for Kalleske, with a cool wet spring, average summer temperatures and a slow, even ripening period into autumn. That long season delivered good yields and excellent quality, with plenty of flavour intensity retained alongside balance.
Why We Love It
This is Durif for drinkers who want real depth, tannin and oak presence, not a softened or casual version of the variety. It has clear Barossa weight, but also enough structure and control to age well. The single-vineyard fruit and traditional élevage make it a strong example of a more serious, cellar-worthy Australian Durif.
Food Pairing
This wine needs robust food with weight, char and savoury depth. Slow-cooked beef, fire-cooked lamb and earthy mushroom dishes all work well, especially when there is smoke, spice or caramelisation involved. Try matching this wine with →

Mood or occasion to match this wine…
A strong red for cold nights, serious meat dishes and occasions where a medium-bodied wine would simply not be enough.
Cellaring
This can be enjoyed now with a good decant, but it is built for extended cellaring. The winery recommends drinking it now or over a decade or more under proper storage conditions.
Producer
Kalleske is a seventh-generation family estate at Greenock in the Barossa Valley, with the family farming the property since 1853. The vineyards have been certified organic and biodynamic since 1998, and all fruit is estate grown. Kalleske’s approach combines rigorous farming with traditional cellar work, including wild fermentation, open-top fermenters, basket pressing and thoughtful barrel maturation. Buckboard reflects the more structured, oak-matured end of the range: a single-vineyard wine shaped by low-yielding vines, careful extraction and a year in American oak to suit the density and tannin of Durif.

FAQ
What does Kalleske Buckboard Durif taste like?
It is a full-bodied, deeply coloured red with violets, baked fruit cake, cherry ripe, plum and sarsaparilla on the nose. The palate is dense and powerful, with dark fruit, chalky tannin and notes of dark chocolate, smoke and coffee from oak.
What is Durif?
Durif is a dark-skinned red grape known for producing full-bodied wines with firm tannin, deep colour and bold fruit. In warm Australian regions like the Barossa, it can make particularly powerful, cellar-worthy reds.
Is this wine dry?
Yes, it is a dry red wine. The fruit is rich and concentrated, but the finish is dry and structured rather than sweet.
How full-bodied is it?
This is firmly at the full-bodied end of the scale. It has high extract, pronounced tannin and visible oak, so it suits drinkers who enjoy larger, more powerful reds.
Does it need decanting?
Yes, decanting helps. Giving it 45 to 60 minutes in a decanter will soften the tannin profile and allow the fruit and oak to come together more clearly.
What temperature and glassware work best?
Serve it at around 16–18°C in a large red wine glass. A broad bowl gives the wine room to open and helps manage its scale and tannin.
Can Kalleske Buckboard Durif be cellared?
Yes. The winery suggests it can be enjoyed now or over a decade or more, and the fruit weight, tannin and oak all support that longer cellaring window.
Does this wine contain preservatives or sulphites?
It is not a No Added Preservative wine, so it does contain sulphites. Some occur naturally during fermentation, and certified organic and biodynamic wines are made under lower permitted sulphite levels than conventional wines.
Is this wine vegan friendly?
Yes, it is listed as vegan suitable. It is also certified organic and certified biodynamic.
What food works best with this wine?
It suits slow-cooked beef, grilled lamb, game and earthy mushroom dishes. Foods with depth, char and protein are the best match for its tannin and oak structure.
Who is this wine likely to suit?
It will suit drinkers who enjoy full-bodied Australian reds with strong tannin, oak influence and plenty of concentration. If you like Durif, powerful Shiraz or Cabernet-led reds with more muscle, this should appeal.

91 Points
“You want flavour? This delivers it in spades. Sweet flavour. Sawdust, raspberry, toffee apples, saturated plum. It’s an overflowing wine, a puppy dog, so eager. It’s clean as a whistle. It’s been done well.”.
Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, November 2019
92 Points
“Massively concentrated, dense purple colour, which stains the glass. Raw, infantile banana and cherry-essence aromas, undeveloped and primal. The palate is deep, dense, very fullbodied. Very tannic and massively proportioned. Blackberry jam and blackcurrant jam. Lush and profound; chewy tannins. Very good in a body-slammer style.”
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, August 2019

2019 Alternative Red of the Year 2019
Winestate Wine of the Year Awards
“A bold super dense style with a chocolaty blackberry bouquet and fleshy red fruit flavours showing through the black cherry fruit characters. Ripe tannins
