Kalleske Plenarius Viognier: Tasting Notes
WINE STYLE → Amber & chewy
An amber, skin-contact Viognier with plenty of aromatic intensity and a palate built as much on texture as fruit. Dried apricot, marmalade, jasmine perfume, candied ginger and hints of lemongrass lead the nose. The palate starts drier than the aroma suggests, then opens into ripe white fruits, natural tannin, a slight oily roundness and grainy minerality. It is a complex, deliberately oxidative-feeling style with grip, depth and a long, provocative finish. This is very much a wine for drinkers who enjoy structure and texture in white wine.

Tasting Notes
Plenarius is aromatically rich and deliberately challenging in a good way. Dried apricot, marmalade, jasmine perfume, candied ginger and hints of lemongrass rise from the glass first. The palate then shifts direction, beginning dry and textural rather than sweet. Ripe white fruits sit alongside natural tannin, a slight oily roundness and a grainy mineral line that gives the wine shape and persistence. It is a multi-dimensional skin-contact white with clear phenolic grip and a finish that lingers well beyond the fruit notes.
Winemaking
Kalleske describes Plenarius very clearly: 100% Viognier, wild fermented completely on skins, matured in hogsheads, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. No sulphites were added. This is an intentional whole-grape approach designed to use skins, tannin and texture as part of the wine’s structure, rather than treating Viognier as a simple aromatic white. The naturally amber colour is a direct result of that extended skin contact.
Vineyard & Vintage
The wine comes from the Kalleske estate in the Barossa and the current release is 2024. The live page positions Plenarius as a wine built around utilising the entire grape to create a skin-contact white that fully shows Viognier’s aromatic and textural traits. The combination of estate-grown fruit, complete skin fermentation and minimal handling gives it a strong sense of identity. This is not a neutral or commercial style; it is very much site-grown fruit interpreted through a deliberate natural-wine lens.
Why We Love It
This is one of the more distinctive white wines in the Kalleske range. It offers the floral and stone-fruit side of Viognier, but with enough grip, texture and savoury complexity to take it well beyond a standard aromatic white. For drinkers who like amber wines, skinsy whites or more structured natural styles, it is a convincing and individual bottle.
Food Pairing
Its tannin, texture and aromatic intensity make it more versatile than a simple fresh white. It works well with dishes that have spice, roast character or richer plant-based elements, and it can also handle cheeses and nuts with ease. Try matching this wine with →

Mood or occasion to match this wine…
A bottle for curious drinkers, food-led lunches and occasions where a straightforward white would be less interesting than something with grip, texture and a bit of edge.
Cellaring
The current page does not make a strong long-term cellaring claim, and this style is best approached for its current complexity and energy. It should drink well now and over the short to medium term if stored properly.
Producer
Kalleske is a seventh-generation family estate at Greenock in the Barossa Valley, farming continuously since 1853. The vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic, and all fruit is estate grown. Plenarius shows a more experimental but still vineyard-led side of the estate. Rather than polishing Viognier into a soft aromatic white, Kalleske takes the entire grape through wild skin fermentation, hogshead maturation and minimal handling to preserve texture and complexity. That approach still sits within the family’s broader philosophy: estate fruit, practical cellar work and wines that reflect both site and intent.

FAQ
What does Kalleske Plenarius Viognier taste like?
It shows dried apricot, marmalade, jasmine perfume, candied ginger and hints of lemongrass on the nose. The palate is dry and textural, with ripe white fruits, natural tannin, oily depth and grainy minerality.
Is this wine dry or sweet?
It smells richer and sweeter than it tastes. Despite the opulent aromatics, the palate starts dry and stays structured, with phenolic grip balancing the ripe fruit.
What does skin-contact mean here?
It means the Viognier was fermented completely on its skins rather than being pressed off immediately like a standard white wine. That gives the wine its amber colour, tannin and extra texture.
How full-bodied is it?
This is a medium to full-bodied white with plenty of texture. It has more grip and palate weight than a typical aromatic Viognier.
Does it need decanting?
Yes, a short decant or at least 15–20 minutes in the glass helps. Air gives the aromatics and phenolic texture more room to settle and show clearly.
What temperature and glassware work best?
Serve it at around 10–12°C in a medium to large white wine glass. Too cold will mute the aromatics and compress the texture.
Can this wine be cellared?
It is best approached for its current texture and complexity, though it should hold over the short to medium term under good storage. The page does not position it as a long-cellaring style in the same way as some of the estate reds.
Does this wine contain preservatives or sulphites?
This is a No Added Preservative wine with no added sulphites. The current specs list free sulphur dioxide at 0 mg/L and total sulphur dioxide at 8 mg/L, which is consistent with naturally occurring sulphites only.
Is this wine vegan friendly?
Yes, it is listed as vegan suitable. It is also certified organic, certified biodynamic and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
What food works best with this wine?
It suits roast cauliflower, Moroccan-style chicken, pumpkin dishes, hard cheeses and foods with spice or texture. It works best where a standard light white would not have enough grip.
Who is this wine likely to suit?
It will suit drinkers who enjoy orange wine, skin-contact whites and textured natural styles. If you like aromatic whites but want more structure, grip and savoury complexity, this is a strong fit.
