Kalleske Congruous Chenin Blanc Semillon: Tasting Notes
WINE STYLE → Textural & mouth-filling
A medium-bodied Barossa white with real texture and plenty of savoury detail. Ripe peach, honeydew melon and pear lead the aromatics, backed by roasted nuts, custard tart and a delicate floral lift. The palate is dry and layered, combining orchard and stone fruit with a soft, gently buttery texture and enough acidity to keep the wine in shape. It is generous without being heavy, and the finish carries a savoury, nutty edge that makes it particularly useful at the table.

Tasting Notes
Congruous opens with ripe peach, honeydew melon and pear, then moves into roasted nuts, custard tart and a light floral note. The palate is medium-bodied and dry, with a rounded, textural mid-palate and bright acidity keeping the wine focused. Chenin Blanc brings shape and line, while Semillon adds body and softness. There is some savoury complexity from lees work and old oak, but the fruit remains clear and open. The finish is long, gently nutty and food-friendly.
Winemaking
The Semillon and Chenin Blanc were harvested separately, then wild fermented with full solids in seasoned French oak puncheons. The wine remained on lees for six months before blending and bottling. This is a low-intervention approach that prioritises texture and complexity rather than overt oak flavour. The older barrels add breadth and gentle savoury detail without taking over the wine.
Vineyard & Vintage
Congruous is sourced from two estate vineyards at Moppa in the Barossa: Semillon planted in 1980 and Chenin Blanc planted in 1988. The vines are low yielding and grown in shallow sand over clay subsoil, which helps retain enough moisture while still limiting vigour. The 2024 season delivered excellent fruit quality, with a mild and even ripening period that preserved freshness while allowing full flavour development. That balance shows clearly in the wine’s ripe fruit, moderate alcohol and bright acidity.
Why We Love It
This is a distinctive white that offers more texture and savoury detail than a straightforward young aromatic style. The Chenin Blanc and Semillon combination works well here, giving the wine both shape and generosity, while wild fermentation and lees ageing add complexity. It is a strong option for drinkers who like white wines with a bit more substance and versatility at the table.
Food Pairing
The wine’s mix of ripe fruit, savoury lees character and fresh acidity makes it particularly flexible with food. It suits roast chicken, seafood with butter or herbs, and vegetable dishes with nuts, grains or gentle spice. Try matching this wine with →

Mood or occasion to match this wine…
A good white for long lunches, roast chicken dinners and situations where a simple crisp white would not have quite enough weight or interest.
Cellaring
Drinking well now for its freshness and textural detail, but it should also develop additional savoury complexity over the short to medium term. A window of around now to 5 years is a sound guide under good storage conditions.
Producer
Kalleske is a seventh-generation family estate based at Greenock in the north-western Barossa, farming continuously since 1853. The vineyards have been certified organic and biodynamic since 1998, and all fruit for the range is estate grown. That farming model gives Kalleske tight control over site expression and fruit quality, while the winemaking remains traditional and restrained, with wild ferments, basket pressing and minimal additions where possible. Congruous is a good example of the estate’s less obvious side: not a big Barossa red, but a textured, vineyard-driven white that still carries the same emphasis on farming, balance and authenticity.

FAQ
What does Kalleske Congruous Chenin Blanc Semillon taste like?
It is a medium-bodied dry white with ripe peach, honeydew melon and pear, plus roasted nuts, custard tart and a light floral note. The palate is rounded and textural, with bright acidity and a savoury finish.
What is a Chenin Blanc Semillon blend?
It is a blend that brings together the freshness and line of Chenin Blanc with the body and softness of Semillon. In this wine, the combination delivers both fruit and texture, making it more layered than a simple early-drinking white.
Is this wine dry?
Yes, it is a dry white wine. The ripe fruit gives some generosity on the palate, but the finish is dry and balanced rather than sweet.
How full-bodied is it?
This sits around medium-bodied. It has more texture and palate weight than a very crisp, lean white, but it still has enough acidity to stay fresh and composed.
Should I decant it?
It does not need formal decanting, but serving it in a proper white wine glass and giving it a little time in the glass helps. The extra air lets the savoury and nutty notes emerge more clearly.
What temperature and glassware work best?
Serve it at around 9–11°C in a medium-sized white wine glass. Too cold and you lose some of the texture and complexity; slightly warmer service shows the wine better.
Can this wine be cellared?
Yes, over the short to medium term. It is very enjoyable now, but it should continue to develop more savoury depth over the next 3 to 5 years.
Does this wine contain preservatives or sulphites?
It is not a No Added Preservative wine, so it does contain sulphites. Some occur naturally during fermentation, and certified organic and biodynamic wines are made under lower permitted sulphite levels than conventional wines.
Is this wine vegan friendly?
Yes, it is listed as vegan suitable. It is also certified organic and certified biodynamic.
What food works best with this wine?
It works well with roast chicken, grilled fish, creamy seafood dishes, grain salads and vegetable-led plates with nuts or herbs. The wine’s texture makes it especially useful with dishes that need more than a very light white.
Who is this wine likely to suit?
It will suit drinkers who like textured dry whites with savoury detail rather than simple fruit-driven styles. If you enjoy Chenin Blanc, barrel-influenced Semillon or more layered white blends, this sits in that space.
