Kalleske Greenock Shiraz: Tasting Notes

WINE STYLE → Polished Tannins & Glossy Fruit

A powerful, single-vineyard Barossa Shiraz with depth, concentration and a more refined frame than the scale might suggest. Black plum, Christmas pudding, dark chocolate, violets, mocha and clove spice lead the aromatics, with toasty oak folded neatly through the fruit. The palate is full-bodied and densely flavoured, but the tannin is polished and controlled rather than aggressive. Oak adds shape and detail, the fruit stays dark and glossy, and the finish is long, firm and well composed.

Tasting Notes

Greenock Shiraz opens with black plum, Christmas pudding, dark chocolate, violets, mocha and clove spice, all of it lifted but firmly Barossa in character. The palate is rich and full-bodied, carrying concentrated dark berry fruit with a line of polished natural tannin through the middle. Oak is clearly part of the style, though it reads as support rather than excess, adding shape, spice and length. There is real density here, but also enough control and balance to keep it composed from start to finish.

Winemaking

The “Greenock” block was harvested on 18 April 2023, then destemmed into open-top fermenters and warm fermented with hand pump-overs twice daily. After eight days on skins, the wine was pressed to a mix of 30% new and the balance seasoned American and French oak hogsheads. Primary fermentation was completed in barrel, followed by natural malolactic fermentation. The wine then matured in oak for fourteen months before bottling.

Vineyard & Vintage

This wine comes from a single Shiraz block on the Kalleske estate at Greenock, on the western edge of Greenock Creek in the northern Barossa Valley. The vines are low yielding and grown in shallow sandy loam over deep red clay and limestone, a site well suited to producing concentration and structure. The 2023 season was the longest and latest on record for Kalleske, with a cool wet spring, average summer temperatures and a slow, steady ripening period into autumn. The result was good yields, excellent quality and strong flavour intensity with balance.

Why We Love It

This is a serious estate Shiraz with both power and control. It has the fruit depth and oak complexity expected from a flagship Barossa single-vineyard release, but the tannins are well managed and the overall shape is more refined than simply heavy. For drinkers who like full-bodied Australian Shiraz with cellaring potential, it is a strong example of the style.

Food Pairing

This wine suits richer dishes with protein, smoke and depth. It works particularly well with slow-cooked red meat, grilled lamb and earthy mushroom dishes that can handle both the concentration and the oak. Try matching this wine with →

Mood or occasion to match this wine…

A bottle for slower dinners, cooler nights and occasions that call for a more serious Barossa red with depth and staying power.

Cellaring

Drinking well now with a decant, but built to age. The winery describes it as a refined Barossa Shiraz with a long cellaring future, and a window of around 10–15 years is a sensible guide under good storage conditions.

Producer

Kalleske is a seventh-generation family estate at Greenock in the Barossa Valley, farming continuously since 1853. The vineyards have been certified organic and biodynamic since 1998, and all fruit is estate grown, giving the family full control over farming and site expression. Winemaking stays close to traditional Barossa methods, including open-top fermentation, hand pump-overs, basket pressing and maturation in hogsheads. Greenock Shiraz is one of the estate’s benchmark wines: a single-vineyard release from old family material, grown, vintaged and matured entirely on the Kalleske property.

FAQ

What does Kalleske Greenock Shiraz taste like?

It is a full-bodied Barossa Shiraz with black plum, Christmas pudding, dark chocolate, violets, mocha and clove spice. The palate is rich and concentrated, with polished tannins, integrated oak and a long finish.

Is this wine dry?

Yes, it is a dry red wine. The fruit is generous and ripe, but the finish is dry and structured rather than sweet.

How full-bodied is it?

This sits firmly at the full-bodied end of the spectrum. It has clear Barossa weight, concentrated dark fruit and enough tannin and oak to support extended ageing.

Does it need decanting?

Yes, decanting helps. Around 45 to 60 minutes gives the oak and fruit more room to settle together and lets the wine show more detail.

What temperature and glassware work best?

Serve it at around 16–18°C in a large red wine glass. A broad bowl gives the wine enough air and helps manage its scale and oak.

Can this wine be cellared?

Yes. The winery describes Greenock as a wine with a long cellaring future, and 10 to 15 years is a sound guide if stored well.

Does this wine contain preservatives or sulphites?

It is not a No Added Preservative wine, so it does contain sulphites. Some occur naturally during fermentation, and certified organic and biodynamic wines are made under lower permitted sulphite levels than conventional wines.

Is this wine vegan friendly?

Yes, it is listed as vegan suitable. It is also certified organic and certified biodynamic.

What food works best with this wine?

It suits slow-cooked beef, roast lamb, game and earthy mushroom dishes. Rich, savoury food with some depth and protein is the best match for its concentration and oak.

Who is this wine likely to suit?

It will suit drinkers who enjoy classic Barossa Shiraz with dark fruit, oak complexity and a proper tannin frame. If you like powerful Australian Shiraz that still keeps shape and refinement, this is a good fit.

How does it compare with Moppa Shiraz?

Greenock is the more serious, single-vineyard wine, with greater concentration, more structure and a longer cellaring outlook. Moppa is still full-bodied, but generally a little more open and approachable in its youth.

Kalleske Greenock Shiraz 2019 Review

"Perforce is a word not oft used. A shame, as it is an elegant word that just by saying it, you understand its intent in expressing a necessity or even the inevitable. It might even mean a glass of Kalleske. Year in year out, the team team works tirelessly for us to enjoy the outcomes of their work in the vineyard and the winery. Tasting their eighteenth release of the Greenock Shiraz is an experience that leaves you thinking you, perforce, I need some more. The 2019 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz is from a single vineyard site in Greenock, a sub-district of the Barossa valley in South Australia. It is a deep and bright purple red which, perforce, is instantly appealing. The nose is youthfully tight and complex with an abundance of plums, dark berries, coffee beans, spices and a hint of nuts that, perforce, awakens the senses. The palate is vibrant with sweet black fruits and spices. The plums are glorious. The coffee is expressive and the dark chocolate mouth coating. Charcuterie is there too, interwoven with firm velvety tannins sustaining the flavours for an extended time. It is robust and elegant in one, perforce, you will desire a second glass
