Delinquente Hell Nero d’Avola 2025: Tasting Notes
WINE STYLE → Juicy, Crunchy New-Wave Red
Delinquente Hell Nero d’Avola 2025 is a juicy, savoury Riverland red with plenty of personality but no unnecessary weight. Plum and sour cherry sit at the centre, lifted by violet and a crack of white pepper, while olive tapenade brings a darker, salty savouriness. Fine dusty tannins frame the fruit and Nero d’Avola’s naturally bright acidity keeps the whole thing fresh. Part whole-bunch carbonic, part traditionally fermented on skins and then rested in old French oak, it lands in that very useful space between serious red and easy-drinking natural wine.

Tasting Notes
Violet and plum lead the nose, quickly joined by sour cherry, olive tapenade and a lift of white pepper. The palate is juicy rather than heavy, with fresh red and dark fruit sitting over a savoury, almost salty core. Fine dusty tannins provide shape, while the naturally high acidity of Nero d’Avola gives the finish a lovely puckering freshness. Medium-bodied, bright and energetic, it is an easy red to keep coming back to.
Winemaking
The 2025 fruit was handled in two different ways. Most was destemmed and fermented on skins for around two weeks with plenty of hands-on work through fermentation, while 25% was left as whole bunches and put through full carbonic maceration. The two parcels were then aged separately in old French hogsheads for eight months before being blended together. The combination gives the wine juicy lifted fruit from the carbonic component, alongside savoury depth, tannin and structure from the traditionally fermented portion.
Vineyard & Vintage
Nero d’Avola is particularly well suited to the Riverland’s warm, dry climate. It is hardy, drought resistant and naturally capable of retaining good acidity even as flavour builds, which makes it an important variety for Delinquente’s view of the region’s future. The fruit is grown organically and biodynamically, with the focus on varieties that can handle heat with less water while still producing fresh, expressive wines.
Why We Love It
This is exactly the sort of red that makes Nero d’Avola so convincing in Australia. There is enough plum and cherry to make it generous, but the olive, pepper and dusty tannin stop it becoming overly fruity. The carbonic portion adds lift without turning it into a simple gluggable red, while the old-oak ageing gives the wine shape without adding obvious vanilla or toast. Fresh, savoury and very food-friendly.
Food Pairing
Bright acidity and savoury tannin make this a natural fit with tomato, char, salty cured meat and Mediterranean flavours. The wine has enough fruit for richness, but enough freshness to keep the whole meal moving.

Drink now for maximum freshness and juicy fruit, or cellar for around three to five years from vintage if you prefer the savoury side to become more prominent. Store somewhere cool, dark and temperature-stable.
Producer
Delinquente Wine Co was founded by Riverland local Con-Greg Grigoriou with a clear focus on small-batch wines from Southern Italian varieties grown in South Australia’s Riverland. Nero d’Avola sits right at the heart of that philosophy: a heat- and drought-tolerant Sicilian grape that thrives in the region while retaining excellent natural acidity. Delinquente works with organically and biodynamically farmed fruit and favours wild, minimal-intervention winemaking that keeps freshness and vineyard character intact. The Hell Series gives the team room to push fermentation and élevage techniques further, while still keeping the wines unmistakably Riverland.

FAQ
What does Delinquente Hell Nero d’Avola 2025 taste like?
It shows juicy plum and sour cherry with violet, olive tapenade and white pepper. The finish is savoury and fresh, with fine dusty tannins and a bright line of acidity.
Is this wine dry, and how full-bodied is it?
Yes, this is a dry red. It sits comfortably at medium-bodied, giving enough plum fruit and texture to feel satisfying without becoming dense or heavy.
What are the tannins and acidity like?
The tannins are fine, dusty and moderate rather than aggressive. Acidity is one of the wine’s defining features, bringing freshness and a slightly puckering quality that keeps the fruit lively.
How should I serve Hell Nero d’Avola?
Serve it slightly cool at around 14–16°C in a medium-sized red wine glass. A short 15-minute decant is optional rather than essential; the wine is designed to be expressive and approachable straight away.
Does Delinquente Hell Nero d’Avola contain preservatives or sulphites?
This is a minimal-intervention natural wine, but the 2025 producer information does not publish an exact SO2 figure or state that it is No Added Preservative. It should therefore not be listed as preservative free unless that specification is confirmed separately.
Is Hell Nero d’Avola vegan friendly?
Yes. Delinquente Hell Nero d’Avola 2025 is vegan suitable, with no animal-derived fining products used.
What food works best with this Nero d’Avola?
Pepperoni pizza, spaghetti puttanesca, eggplant parmigiana and grilled meats all suit it beautifully. Tomato, olives, char and salty flavours work particularly well with the wine’s acidity and savoury edge.
Can Delinquente Hell Nero d’Avola 2025 be cellared?
Yes, although it is very enjoyable young. Drink now for the freshest fruit, or cellar for around three to five years from vintage to let the savoury and earthy characters become more pronounced.
Who will enjoy Delinquente Hell Nero d’Avola most?
It will suit drinkers who like juicy Mediterranean reds with freshness rather than heavy oak or high extraction. Fans of Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Grenache and brighter styles of Shiraz should find plenty to like here.
If I like Grenache, will I like this Nero d’Avola?
Very likely if you enjoy Grenache for its juicy fruit and easy medium-bodied shape. Hell Nero d’Avola is a little darker and more savoury, with firmer acidity, olive notes and dusty tannin giving it a distinctly Sicilian edge.
