"Deep red/purple, glass-staining, with a shy but deep bouquet, which is latent and full of promise. Underlying spices, a core of sweet ripe cherry fruit, the tannins soft and full on the finish, adding structure and length. Spices and graphite. A superb wine with a big future. Needs time for the full payoff.” 95 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review.

A wine to savour and impress.

Tasting notes from the winery for Yangarra Kings Wood Shiraz 2019

We have produced the “Whole Bunch” Shiraz since 2009. The use of whole bunches has become part of all our Shiraz winemaking, and we felt this wine had the opportunity to further evolve. We had started introducing large format foudre in 2017, and a single block of Shiraz (block 12) started to show its head with a particular style that was very much suited to whole bunch and large format oak. The Whole Bunch label has evolved to become the King’s Wood.

Royal Oaks and King’s Wood were forests planted by monarchs to build cathedrals and navies. Long term planning. The beautiful old French oak in these giant foudre vessels is perfect for schooling and gently, gradually polishing and protecting the brightest, spiciest Shiraz we grow on Yangarra.

VINTAGE SUMMARY

The 2019 growing season was very dry, which resulted in incredibly low yields. We had a relatively warm lead up to the ripening period, which produced a very condensed and fast harvest. With Roussanne being a late ripening variety, it faired very well in a season like this, giving rise to concentration, freshness of flavor and marked natural acidity.

WINEMAKING

Sourced exclusively from Block 12 (2.3 Ha) which sits on an east facing, ironstone sandy outcrop. Hand-picked, 25% whole bunches and the remainder has been mechanical berry sorted. Cold Soak. Open Fermenters. Plunged. Wild yeast ferment. No pressings are used in this wine. Exclusively matured in 25hL French oak Foudre for 15 months. Bottled August 2019.

VINEYARD

Yangarra is a single-vineyard estate situated in the north- east of the McLaren Vale region, South Australia. Yangarra’s combination of ancient geology, higher altitude and Mediterranean climate provide the ideal growing conditions for the best grape varieties of the southern Rhône.

2017 VINTAGE

99 Points Halliday Wine Companion 2020: It's impossible to find anything done or not done that would improve this superb wine. It's (only) medium-bodied but fills the senses with its tantalising bouquet, always with something more to say. Yet it pales into significance when you taste the wine. It takes intensity and length to a new horizon, a sip as complex as a Rutherglen muscat

96 points Toni Paterson, The Real Review: A rare mix of power and restraint. Perfectly ripe, bright, concentrated fruit in the red cherry, raspberry and red plum sphere. The palate is captivating with its plush, supple, velvety nature. All of the elements are perfectly integrated. Certified organic and biodynamic. Highly recommended

2016 VINTAGE

(Previous vintages called Whole Bunch Shiraz)

97 Points Campbell Matinson, Halliday Wine Companion: Whole bunches, wild yeast, open fermenters and all-French oak (35% new). The quality here is sensational. It delivers a power of fruit in the freshest of ways, its glove of smoky/cocoa-like oak the perfect partner. Seriously ultra-fine tannin, and accompanying length, completes what must be described as a beautiful picture.

93 Points Toni Paterson, The Real Review: A beautifully supple wine with soft cherries and mulberries. Fleshy and plush, and supported by stylish framing tannin. Gorgeous now, though cellaring will benefit the wine 20 Feb 2019
