Yangarra Circle Piquepoul 2025: Tasting Notes

WINE STYLE → Sea-spray & mineral

Yangarra Circle Piquepoul 2025 is a crisp, dry and beautifully coastal white from Yangarra’s certified organic and biodynamic estate in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. It opens with lemon zest, green apple, snow pea tendril, fennel, soft dill, river mint and sea spray. The palate is light, bright and mouth-watering, with salty minerality, Granny Smith apple-skin texture and just enough lees creaminess to keep the wine from feeling too lean. This is seafood wine in its purest form: fresh, precise, mineral and quietly moreish.

Tasting Notes

Yangarra Circle Piquepoul 2025 is pale, bright and immediately refreshing. Aromas are delicate and coastal, with lemon zest, green apple, snow pea tendril, sea spray, fennel seed, soft dill and river mint. The palate is light-bodied, dry and sharply defined, driven by rippling acidity and a long saline line. A fine Granny Smith apple-skin phenolic note adds interest on the finish, while subtle lees work gives a small amount of creamy texture without blunting the wine’s crisp, mineral energy. It finishes clean, salty and mouth-watering.

Winemaking

The Piquepoul Blanc was hand-picked on 15 February from a small estate block. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed, then the clear juice was racked to stainless steel for cool fermentation. Only the early free-run juice was used, preserving delicacy and freshness. The wine matured on lees with stirring in a mixture of stainless steel and cocciopesto amphorae for 4.5 months before bottling in July 2025. The result is bright and linear, with added texture from lees and amphora rather than overt oak flavour.

Vineyard & Vintage

This wine comes from Yangarra’s elevated single-vineyard estate in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. The Piquepoul Blanc block was planted in 2015 and grows in sandy loam over clay, a site that suits the variety’s naturally high-acid, mineral style. The 2025 season was the driest on record for the region, producing very low yields, small berries and concentrated fruit. A warm February led to a compact, rapid ripening window, yet the wines retained vibrant natural acidity and notable intensity.

Why We Love It

Because it is the sort of white that makes seafood taste better. Piquepoul naturally brings high acidity and coastal freshness, and Yangarra gives it polish, texture and biodynamic clarity. It is not loud or tropical; it is all lemon zest, green apple, herbs, sea spray and salty minerality. Keep it cold for oysters, prawns, ceviche, fish tacos or a hot afternoon when Sauvignon Blanc feels too obvious.

Food Pairing

This is a natural match for seafood, citrus, salt and herbs. The acidity cuts through fried or oily textures, while the saline finish loves oysters, prawns, sashimi, ceviche, calamari, grilled fish and crisp salads. Try matching this wine with →

Mood or occasion to match this wine…

Beach picnic, seafood platter, sunny balcony, oysters before dinner, or the first bottle opened while everyone is still arriving. Chill it well and let the lemony, salty edge do the work.

Cellaring

Best enjoyed young while the lemon zest, green apple, sea spray and salty acidity are at their sharpest. Drink now and over the next 2–3 years if you enjoy a slightly more savoury, integrated white. Once opened, reseal and refrigerate, then enjoy within 2–3 days.

Producer

Yangarra Estate is based in Blewitt Springs, in the elevated north-east of McLaren Vale, and is one of Australia’s benchmark organic and biodynamic producers. The estate focuses strongly on Mediterranean and Southern Rhône varieties that suit its warm days, coastal influence, sandy soils and ancient geology. The Circle range is made for vibrant, earlier-drinking wines from estate-grown organic and biodynamic fruit, while still carrying Yangarra’s precision and sense of site. This Piquepoul comes from a small block planted in 2015 and shows the producer’s skill with alternative white varieties.

FAQ

What does Yangarra Circle Piquepoul 2025 taste like?

It tastes crisp, dry and coastal, with lemon zest, green apple, snow pea tendril, sea spray, fennel, dill and river mint. The palate is light-bodied and mouth-watering, with salty minerality and a clean, long finish. A gentle apple-skin texture and lees creaminess add detail without making the wine heavy.

What is Piquepoul?

Piquepoul Blanc is an old southern French white grape variety known for naturally high acidity and a zippy, seafood-friendly style. The name is often linked to the idea of “lip-stinging” freshness, which suits the grape beautifully. It usually shows citrus, green apple, herbs and a salty mineral edge.

Is this wine dry or sweet?

This is a dry white wine. The fruit sits in the lemon, green apple and pear-skin spectrum rather than tropical sweetness. The finish is clean, saline and mouth-watering.

How light-bodied and acidic is it?

It is light-bodied, crisp and high in acidity. Piquepoul naturally holds its freshness well, even in warm Mediterranean-style climates such as McLaren Vale. The palate is bright and linear, with a long salty finish.

How should I serve Yangarra Circle Piquepoul?

Serve well chilled at around 7–9°C in a white wine glass or universal wine glass. A tulip-shaped glass will help hold the lemon, herb and sea-spray aromatics. No decanting is needed.

Can this wine be cellared?

This wine is best enjoyed young for maximum citrus lift, acidity and salty freshness. Drink now and over the next 2–3 years if you enjoy a slightly more savoury expression. Store it cool and dark if keeping it beyond the first year.

Does this wine contain preservatives or sulphites?

This is not a No Added Preservative wine, so it does contain sulphites. It is certified organic and biodynamic, so it is made within the lower sulphur limits required for those wine standards. It is a clean, dry and carefully made white.

Is Yangarra Circle Piquepoul vegan friendly?

Yes. Yangarra Circle Piquepoul is vegan suitable, certified organic and certified biodynamic. It is a strong option for drinkers looking for a crisp Australian white made with thoughtful farming and no animal-derived fining inputs.

What food pairs best with this wine?

It is excellent with oysters, prawns, sashimi, ceviche, grilled fish, calamari, fish tacos and herb-forward salads. The acidity cuts through fried textures and olive oil, while the saline finish suits shellfish and briny flavours. For vegetarian pairings, try zucchini fritters, goat cheese salad, lemony asparagus or salty potato dishes.

Who will love this wine?

This will suit drinkers who enjoy very crisp, dry white wines with citrus, herbs and a mineral finish. If you like Albariño, dry Riesling, Chablis, Picpoul de Pinet or coastal Sauvignon Blanc, this biodynamic McLaren Vale Piquepoul is a smart choice. It is especially good for seafood lovers and warm-weather drinking.

Is this wine keto friendly?

This is a dry white wine, which is generally the preferred style for lower-carb drinking. For strict keto, keep serves modest and check your own daily carbohydrate limits. Pair with lower-carb foods such as oysters, prawns, grilled fish, calamari, asparagus or goat cheese salad.

90 Points - Shanteh Wale - Winepilot SA Wine Guide

An alluring mix of green pear skin, orchard apples and spring herbs. Dill, sage and celery heart. A lemon pith citrus core that leans to green tea tannins and raw camel nut creaminess. This sits in the camp of those Austrian food-friendly varieties – white pepper abounds. Intriguing; hard to stop thinking about the possible delights of wine pairings. Drink now.

"This has a hint of margarita salt salinity and is just as addictive. Crunchy, linear and fresh. Drink now." - Shanteh Wale, SA Wine Guide - Winepilot, Dec 2024
