Vintage Conditions
A strong 2022 vintage from high-quality fruit and low to moderate yields with excellent natural acidity from an overall cool vintage with extended ripening periods for most varieties. Perhaps one of the longest vintages we have experienced, harvest continued for 11 weeks from early February to late April. Grenache for this gem was harvested in late March.
Winemaking/Vinification
Grenache was picked in late March at approximately 13 Baumé. It was then de-stemmed and cooled to 8ºC, where it spent 3 days in a tank pre-fermentation to cold soak. After this the grapes were allowed to warm to 18ºC, where fermentation then commenced. Fermentation then took 2 weeks to complete to dry, and allowed to warm to 24ºC at the end of fermentation for extraction. The wine then completed malolactic fermentation, then left with French oak for 5 months. The wine was bottled in late August 2022. No sulphur dioxide was used at any point.
Grapes & Location
We’ve long dreamt of bringing our own estate-grown Preservative Free Grenache to fruition, and we’re thoroughly thrilled it’s here now!
Previously, we did not have enough grenache to make a dedicated varietal. So, in 2021, Temple Bruer acquired not one, but two exquisite Riverland vineyards with gorgeous old grenache. We are putting enormous effort into reworking both properties to the high Temple Bruer standard of sustainable and organic viticulture.
In 2021, Temple Bruer acquired not one, but two exquisite Riverland vineyards with gorgeous old grenache. We are putting enormous effort into reworking both properties to the high Temple Bruer standard of sustainable and organic viticulture. These vineyards have two main varying soils: River valley soils compromising of loam over clay subsoils, found on the floodplains in the Riverland where floods deposited silt and clay; Mallee soil that consists of sand over lime and clay layers and can be characterised by the slight hills or lows throughout the region. The Riverland has continental climate where there are warm, long sunny days with cool nights. Both the climate and the soils produce ripe and rich fruit, that sees little disease pressure due to low humidity, which makes the region perfect for growing Certified Organic grapes.
