Australia’s NASAA Organic Wine of the Year 2017 is Temple Bruer Preservative Free TB621 Mataro Shiraz Grenache 2016
"The winning wine, TB621 Mataro Shiraz Grenache 2016, used grapes sourced from Temple Bruer’s own properties in the Riverland at Loxton, Eden Valley and Langhorne Creek. The Mataro from Loxton; Shiraz from Eden Valley; Grenache from Langhorne Creek."
Judges’ description: “Chocolaty aromas laced with liquorice and has hints of plums. The powerful varietal fruit flavours are ripe and intense. Has good tannin structure and nice level of acidity”.
Winery chief David Bruer said: “We’re very pleased indeed. We work really hard to make preservative free wines that keep. It’s particularly good that the Mataro came from our oldest vines at Loxton planted shortly after World War II by the soldier settlers”.
Slow and extended ripening of the in Loxton and Eden Valley vineyards lead to exceptional fruit flavour in the parcels that created this wine. Langhorne creek was also consistent with seasonal conditions for the best Grenache from previous vintage experience. Medium red with purple hue with aromas of Spice, Cherry, white pepper and dried herbs. Bright fruit flavours with fullness across the palate towards a medium length finish.
LOXTON, EDEN VALLEY & LANGHORNE CREEK VINEYARD
WINEMAKING
Each parcel was made separately to showcase the fruit individually from each region before blending the final wine. Hand-picked Mataro was crushed and underwent a cool to moderate fermentation temperature with short pump-overs four times per day. Shiraz was harvested in two parcels, some hand-picked, and underwent a cool fermentation with hand pump-overs twice per day, pressing after the completion of fermentation. Grenache was machine harvested, crushed and underwent a cool to moderate fermentation with two pump-overs per day, early pressing before the completion of fermentation.
