"Attractively fruited and immediately appealing, the wine shows sweet cherry, dark plum, floral and mixed spice characters on the nose with subtle cedary complexity. The palate is succulent and plump with excellent fruit intensity and smooth mouthfeel, finishing long and very tasty. At its best: now to 2024."

Tasting notes from the winery for Primrose Path Organic Shiraz 2018

The Primrose Path refers to a relaxed life of ease and pleasure. The trick is retaining grace and avoiding indulgence. Nowhere seems more suited to this life than South Australia, a region devoted to a culture of food and wine against a backdrop of dazzling beauty.

The Primrose Path South Australia Shiraz likewise walks a fine line, balancing style and opulence whilst at all times inviting and expressive.

Blackberry and plum fruit with black pepper spice lead the nose and it flows delightfully through the palate. This is a richly scented and flavoursome wine with bright fruit, supportive oak and fine natural acidity. This wine is drinking beautifully now in it’s youth.

Sourced exclusively from fourth generation vignerons, the Grigoriou family who are based in the heart of the dry grown vineyards of the Monash Valley. Here the vines are stronger, healthier and simply put, produce exceptional fruit year in and year out.

VINYARDS: These well-established vineyards, up to 30 years of age, are lanted in some of Australia’s most fertile soils. At just under two hours from the famed Barossa, the area is rich in nutrients, has a mostly dry climate and receives most of rainfall through Autumn, which is perfect timing. The vineyards have good vigour, so vines are regulated with drip irrigation and planted widely to allow for growth also allowing the air flow to reduce disease pressure and help sustain organic practices.

WINEMAKING: The fruit for this wine was harvested early, so before getting too ripe in flavour and sugars to ensure fine natural acidity remained in the resultant wine. A short fermentation period solely in stainless steel was followed by partial storage in second use French oak barrels and the remainder in stainless steel. Post maturation the wine was carefully blended with and bottled. Over-all the wine saw minimal handling and intervention. Crafted solely to ensure crisp, fresh fruit flavours are maintained.

VINTAGE: 2018 began well with solid winter rains replenishing the soil from the year prior. The vines had very good vigour throughout spring but with the drying of summer it was kept in check. A couple of light rain events in the new year and cool weather kept ripening at moderate pace before beautiful warm days and sunshine toward the end of summer finished ripening off perfectly. This should be considered a very good year for most growers.

"Not to be confused with The Shining Path, a revolutionary communist party and political organization in Peru espousing Marxism–Leninism–Maoism and Marxism–Leninism–Maoism–Gonzalo Thought, or the excellent, but kinda creepy song by Shriekback.

It’s packed with sweet raspberry and blueberry, but has a bit of shape and tannin to counter that. It’s clean, a little saline and dried herby, and has a plush and solid finish. It’s built to entertain a those who want a little succulence and sweetness in their Shiraz, but it’s not a bad wine at all."
