Tasting Notes
Deep garnet red in the glass, with dried oregano woven through red cherry and dark cherry aromas. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, led by ripe cherry fruit, savoury herb detail and the grainy tannins typical of traditional Chianti. Fresh acidity lifts the finish, making the wine bright, savoury and ready for tomato-rich food, herbs, roast vegetables and simple grilled meats.
Winemaking
The fruit is destemmed and gently crushed, then fermented in temperature-controlled concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally. The wine ages partly in concrete and partly in large untoasted oak casks before blending and short bottle refinement, preserving Sangiovese’s cherry fruit, oregano-like savoury lift and fresh Chianti structure.
Vineyard & Vintage
Poggiotondo Chianti DOCG comes from the family estate in Tuscany, where the vineyards sit at around 100 metres altitude with southwest exposure. The soils are marine in origin, calcareous and rich in white sea shells, contributing elegance and complexity. The mild western Chianti climate, influenced by the Mediterranean Sea, supports balanced ripening. The 2023 release is 13.5% ABV, dry, with residual sugar below 1 g/L.
Why We Love It
This is the kind of red that reminds you why Chianti belongs at the table. It has enough cherry fruit to be inviting, enough oregano and tannin to be savoury, and enough acidity to make pasta, pizza, antipasto and roast vegetables taste better. Certified organic and vegan suitable, it brings Tuscan charm without heaviness.
Food Pairing
Chianti loves tomato, herbs, olive oil, roasted vegetables, grilled meats and earthy vegetarian dishes. The wine’s cherry fruit and fresh acidity are especially good with Italian classics, while the grainy tannins suit richer sauces and aged cheese.

Mood or occasion to match this wine…
Pour it for pasta night, woodfired pizza, antipasto with friends or a Tuscan-style dinner where the wine should refresh the palate as much as it charms. It is relaxed, savoury and quietly transportive.
Cellaring
Drink now to 2029 for the best balance of cherry fruit, dried oregano and bright acidity. Chianti can develop more savoury, earthy complexity with short-term ageing, but this release is already drinking beautifully with food. Store in a cool, dark place away from heat.
Producer
Poggiotondo is the Tuscan family estate of Alberto and Alessandra Antonini, set among the rounded hills that give the property its name. The estate was established in 1968 by Alberto’s father, Carlo Antonini, and now focuses on certified organic farming across estate vineyards. The soils are calcareous and marine in origin, with white shells contributing elegance and complexity. Poggiotondo’s approach is traditional and low-intervention: no synthetic chemicals in the vineyard, indigenous yeasts in the cellar, concrete tanks, large untoasted casks and winemaking that follows the same organic principles as the farming.

FAQ
What does Poggiotondo Chianti DOCG 2023 taste like?
It tastes savoury, cherry-led and fresh, with dried oregano, red cherry, dark cherry and ripe cherry on the palate. The tannins are grainy and traditional in style, giving the wine food-friendly grip. Fresh acidity keeps the finish bright and lively.
Is this Chianti dry, sweet or full-bodied?
This is a dry red wine, with residual sugar below 1 g/L. It is medium-bodied rather than full and heavy. The cherry fruit is ripe, but the wine finishes savoury and fresh, not sweet.
What are the tannins and acidity like?
The tannins are grainy and moderately firm, which is classic for traditional Chianti. The acidity is vibrant and fresh, giving the wine its lift and food-pairing strength. Together, they make the wine excellent with tomato, herbs, cheese and roast vegetables.
Does this wine contain preservatives or sulphites?
This is a certified organic Chianti, not a No Added Preservative wine. It may contain sulphites, as most wines do, and organic wines are made to lower allowable sulphur limits than conventional wines. It is certified organic and vegan suitable.
How should I serve Poggiotondo Chianti DOCG?
Serve at around 15–17°C in a medium red wine glass. A short 15-minute decant or a little time in the glass will soften the tannins and open the cherry and oregano notes. Avoid serving it too warm, as the freshness is central to the style.
What food pairs well with this wine?
It pairs beautifully with pasta al pomodoro, mushroom ragù, pizza, lasagne, chicken cacciatore, grilled lamb, pecorino and antipasto. The acidity cuts through tomato and olive oil, while the tannins work with protein and aged cheese. For a vegetarian match, try mushroom ragù, eggplant parmigiana or margherita pizza.
Can this Chianti be cellared?
Yes, it can be cellared short-term. Drink now to 2029 for a balance of cherry fruit, dried herbs and fresh acidity. With time, it may take on more savoury, earthy and dried-herb complexity.
Is Poggiotondo Chianti DOCG vegan friendly?
Yes, this wine is vegan suitable. It is also certified organic and made from estate-grown Tuscan fruit. That makes it a strong choice for shared tables where you want a classic Italian red with organic credentials.
Who will enjoy this Chianti the most?
This is ideal for drinkers who enjoy savoury, medium-bodied reds with cherry, herbs, tannin and acidity. If you like Sangiovese and Italian-style red varietals, Pinot Noir with more grip, or food-friendly organic reds, this will suit you well. It is fresher and more savoury than plush Shiraz.
Is this wine keto friendly?
Yes, this is a very low-sugar dry red wine, with residual sugar below 1 g/L and no calories from sugar per 100mL. It can suit many keto-conscious drinkers looking for an organic red. Alcohol still contributes calories, so enjoy it mindfully as part of your broader plan.
