Tasting Notes
Lively ruby red in the glass, with red cherry, redcurrant and darker cherry aromas joined by dried oregano, thyme, floral detail and gentle spice. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with juicy red fruit held firmly by tense, savoury tannins. Vibrant acidity brings energy and length, carrying earthy tones, herbs and cherry through a persistent, mouth-watering finish.
Winemaking
The blend is 94% Sangiovese, 3% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino. After destemming and crushing, the grapes ferment in temperature-controlled concrete tanks using indigenous yeasts, followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine matures for approximately eight months, with half held in concrete and half in large 5,400-litre untoasted oak casks, then receives a short period of bottle refinement.
Vineyard & Vintage
The estate vineyards lie near Cerreto Guidi in the western part of Chianti, where the influence of the Mediterranean moderates the Tuscan climate. Calcareous soils of marine origin contain abundant white seashell material, contributing freshness, tension and mineral energy. Poggiotondo has been certified organic since the 2014 vintage and achieved Equalitas sustainable-winery certification in 2024.
Why We Love It
This is Chianti with energy rather than weight. Juicy cherry fruit draws you in, then herbs, earth, firm tannins and bright acidity make it compelling at the table. It has genuine Tuscan character, yet remains approachable enough for an easy pasta night or pizza shared with friends.
Food Pairing
Chianti’s natural acidity is ideal with tomato, while its firm tannins suit protein, aged cheese and roasted flavours. Mushrooms, lentils and eggplant bring out the wine’s earthy and herbal details.

Mood or occasion to match this wine…
Made for a long table, generous bowls of pasta and conversation that carries on well past dinner. It is equally at home beside Friday-night pizza or a more elaborate Tuscan-inspired lunch.
Cellaring
Enjoy now after a little air, or cellar until approximately 2031 under cool, stable conditions. Short-term ageing should soften the firm tannins and develop more dried-herb, leather and earthy complexity while retaining Sangiovese’s characteristic acidity.
Producer
Poggiotondo is a family-owned estate near Cerreto Guidi in Tuscany’s Chianti region. Carlo Antonini established the property in 1968, and today his son Alberto runs it with his wife, Alessandra, focusing on indigenous Tuscan varieties and wines with freshness, balance and a strong sense of place. The estate farms approximately 50 hectares of vineyards organically and has been certified organic since the 2014 vintage. Concrete fermentation, native yeasts and large untoasted casks preserve the vitality of Sangiovese, while the estate’s 2024 Equalitas certification recognises its broader environmental, social and economic sustainability program.

FAQ
What does Poggiotondo Chianti DOCG 2024 taste like?
It shows red and dark cherry, redcurrant, dried oregano, thyme, floral detail and earthy spice. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with vibrant acidity, firm savoury tannins and a juicy, persistent finish.
Which grapes are used in this Chianti?
The 2024 blend is 94% Sangiovese, 3% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino. Sangiovese provides the cherry fruit, acidity and tannin, while the smaller components add colour, perfume and traditional Tuscan character.
Is this wine dry, and how heavy is it?
This is a dry, medium-bodied red rather than a rich or heavy one. Its bright acidity and firm structure make it refreshing with food, despite the ripe cherry fruit.
What are the tannins and acidity like?
The tannins are firm, tense and fine-grained, giving the wine a traditional gastronomic structure. Acidity is high and vibrant, creating lift and making the wine particularly successful with tomato, olive oil and richer dishes.
How should I serve Poggiotondo Chianti?
Serve it at approximately 15–17°C in a medium-sized red-wine glass. Slightly cooler than Australian room temperature is ideal, as this keeps the cherry fruit fresh and the alcohol discreet.
Should I decant the 2024 Chianti?
A short decant of twenty to thirty minutes is worthwhile, especially while the wine is young. Air helps the firm tannins settle and releases more cherry, thyme and earthy detail.
Does this Chianti contain preservatives or sulphites?
It contains added preservative 220 and is not a No Added Preservative wine. Sulphites also occur naturally during fermentation, while certified-organic production permits lower maximum sulphur levels than conventional wine production.
Is Poggiotondo Chianti DOCG vegan friendly?
Yes. The 2024 Australian bottle is labelled vegan friendly and certified organic.
What food pairs well with this wine?
It is excellent with tomato pasta, woodfired pizza, lasagne, chicken cacciatore, grilled lamb, pecorino and antipasto. Vegetarian matches include mushroom ragù, lentil bolognese, eggplant parmigiana and roast capsicum dishes.
Who will enjoy this wine, and what is it similar to?
It will appeal to drinkers who enjoy savoury, high-acid reds with cherry fruit and noticeable tannin. Those who like traditional Sangiovese, lighter Italian reds or fresh styles of Nebbiolo and Barbera should enjoy its energetic, food-focused character.
Can it be cellared, and how long does it keep after opening?
Cellar it until around 2031 for greater savoury and earthy complexity. Once opened, reseal and refrigerate the bottle, then enjoy it within three to four days; allow each serving to return to around 15°C.
