Shiraz and Grenache together makes for such a dynamic blend and decadent mouthfeel. Shiraz bringing the mid palate weight and intensity of fruit flavours, while the spicy liveliness of Grenache pulls everything together for a party on your palate. The finish is just like ending your night with smooth Jazz.

Think wild red forest fruits like strawberries and barberries piled high on a creamy, crunchy pavlova. In the background, notes of raspberry leaf tea hint to the partial whole bunches used in the fermentation and completed by a feather-light touch of delicate French oak.

Vintage

2020 posed many challenges throughout Australia. Another intense drought year through the growing season was followed by one of the most devastating bushfire seasons this country has ever seen. Fortunately McLaren Vale was largely unaffected by this devastation and the early signs indicate 2020 to be a very special vintage; one to savour. Moderate weather throughout the picking season, combined with lower yields allowed the flavours to develop harmoniously and in balance. Varietal expression was excellent with Shiraz and Grenache showing lovely intense flavour without excessive tannin or alcohol. Tempranillo and Graciano are showing lovely plum and pepper characters and will be intriguing to see how they develop after time in oak and bottle.

Paxton AAA

The AAA on the label pays homage to David’s days in the wool trade and was stamped on the best grades of wool by the Guesser. It is a vibrant blend of approximately 60% Shiraz and 40% Grenache from some special little pockets amongst our vineyards.

The Shiraz was selected from the ‘Gateway’ and ‘Jones Block’ vineyards, renowned for producing some of the best fruit in the region. These select parcels were blended with complimentary Grenache to create a wine that is engaging to a wide range of drinkers. Our blend is fun, appealing and, unlike some members of Paxton, not over the top.

Colour

Bright crimson red with a pink hue

Cellaring

The AAA is a fantastic wine when young, with potential to get even better in bottle over 10 years plus.

Vinification

Individual vineyard parcels of Shiraz and Grenache fermented in a combination of open top and static fermenters. During this process, each parcel was plunged and/or pumped over twice a day for 14 days, to extract colour, flavour and tannin structure. The ferments were pressed to seasoned French oak barriques (225L) and puncheons (500L), where they were nurtured for 9 months prior to blending and bottling

93pt biodynamic AAA McLaren Vale rarity
"A 60/40% blend, separate lots fermented in open or closed vessels, matured in used barriques for 12 months prior to blending. It's medium-bodied at best, but there's no shortage of flavour, and sufficient extract to provide texture (and length). Attractive wine, with McLaren Vale's stamp on it from the word go...93pts" (Halliday).

92 Points

Showing sweet berry notes of raspberry and mulberry together with clove and floral, it's juicy and supple on the palate displaying soothing mouthfeel and spicy nuances. Generous and gentle at the same time with a lengthy silky finish. At its best: now to 2027.
