Showing classic aged Cabernet Sauvignon characters of leather & cedar and a hint of vanilla. The palate is smooth and medium-bodied, and still retains a good acid line. There are very fine chalky tannins on the finish, a very pleasurable drink.
The reason you get this wine at such a cheap price is that it is the ugly duckling...a slight miscalculation meant that not enough "head space" was left in the bottle, so when the wine expanded slightly due to small temperature variations, there wasn't quite enough room in the bottle, so some wine got squeezed out past the cork and has stained the top of it. But don't let that worry you, like the duckling, the liquid inside is beautiful, and this wine is drinking superbly now and has a couple of years left in it yet.
The Story
This wine comes from Fernbrook Estate in the Porongorups in WA's Great Southern wine region. It's just down the road from Freeehand wines in Mount Barker and it is courtesy of Matt Eastwell from Freehand that we got on to this amazing, nearly 15 year old, preservative free Cabernet Sauvignon.
Todd Faulkner-Pearce has run Fernbrook Estate winery with his wife Michelle since the late nineties, developing the techniques and processes required to produce high quality wine with zero sulphur additions. And, with Todd's help, it is here that the Freehand team make all their wines.
The vineyard has been managed organically since the late nineties. The fruit was hand-picked then de-stemmed into open top wax lined concrete fermenters & hand plunged during fermentation. Gently pressed out in a hand operated basket press and matured in barrel for a minimum of 24 months. Bottled unfiltered and unfined.
With no fining agents used, it is suitable for vegans.
