This lightly bubbly rose has a delicious nose of exotic flowers and musk, pithy grapefruit, blood orange and citrus blossom. On the pallet there it is a summery mixed fruit salad experience, that is light, refreshingly fruity yet with a dry finish.

Pétillant Naturel (Pet Nat) is essentially farmhouse champagne - sparkling wine made in the méthode ancestrale without the addition of extra yeasts or sugars. Made from five varietals grown across both Ngeringa properties:  An exotic blend of Viognier from the sparkling micaceous soils of our Nairne Iluma Vinyeard; Pink Semillon and Chardonnay from the easterly-facing slopes of the Summit Vineyard; and early picked shiraz and pinot noir.

VINTAGE NOTES

The winter and spring of 2017 leading up our 2018 harvest were drier and warmer than average with a relative early bud burst and flowering and not a lot of water reserves in the soil. Our vines required supplementary irrigation from first week of January to moderate vine stress due to a hot dry summer that continued right up to vintage. Our yields for most varieties were above average with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producing at just over a kilogram per vine, while our Syrah was on average just on target with 1kg per plant. 
Fruit concentration was good while the acid balance was a little down due to the hot and dry conditions, especially if we compare it to 2017 which in contrast was a cool, long and slow ripening season. Finally the wines is the cellar show amazing concentration and in summary the single vineyard wines are shaping up to look like one of the better vintages to date.

WINEMAKING NOTES

An exotic blend of the viognier, pink semillon, early-pick shiraz, pinot and chardonnay. Wild fermentation, no enzymes, oxidative handling pre-fermentation, spontaneous malolactic fermentation, gentle extraction, warmer fermentation, minimal temperature control. No fining. Estate bottled. Small amounts of sulphites added before bottling.

Fruit salad of varieties here, but that ain’t the point, it’s bright, fizzy, delicious that’s the motif. From biodynamic vines. I’m cheering on the increasing number of pet nats emerging from all sorts of producers across Australia; this one came before many on the new wave. The 2018 is to be released soonish, the 2017 if still in market is also great.

Fizzy, lively, juicy, bright and so easy to drink. Fun, festive pink colour, blasting from the glass with fruity scents, the wine overall has an almost Passiona soft drink feel to it but decidedly dry, and it’s spicy and chalky in texture too. Far out, this has smashable written all over it. Exciting thing this, and of the style it is an excellent example.
