Tasting Notes for Merinas Tempranillo Syrah from the Winery

Aromas of red berries and fruits, as well as floral notes, develop in the nose and on the palate. The balanced body and the crisp freshness round off the overall picture of this harmoniously successful Rosado.

This wine was produced from grapes from Bodegas Fontana's own vineyards, surrounded by century-old oak trees and sustainably managed as an integrated ecosystem in Uclés (Castile). The continental climate, with sunny days and crisp nights, allows winemakers to produce wines with intense fruit and excellent grape variety definition that retain remarkable freshness. The grapes were harvested overnight or early in the morning and quickly transported to the state-of-the-art winery where they were destemmed, lightly pressed and mashed. They then underwent a cold maceration of 7 hours before racking. Fermentation was interrupted by cooling the wine as soon as the desired balance between fruit concentration, acidity and residual sugar was achieved.

The vineyards of Bodegas Fontana are located in Uclés in the Castile region, about 100 km east of Madrid at an altitude of 700 to 800 m. In addition to viticulture, sheep farming still plays a major role in this region. The sheep are still driven overland on the medieval paths, the “Cañadas”. These paths also run through the winery's vineyards. For the winemakers of Fontana, this type of sheep farming is not only a cultural symbol of the region, but also represents a model for coexistence with nature, comparable to Fontana's commitment to organic and sustainable viticulture. Through sustainable winemaking and respectful winemaking, wines of great purity are produced here that express the personality of Castile. To emphasize the special quality of these wines, they were named after the noblest breed of sheep, the Merinas. These are particularly known for the high quality of their wool.
