Fordson Zinfandel is rich purple-red in colour. Ascending from the glass are intense and lifted aromas of blackberry jam, jubes, clove spice, Christmas cake and a touch of choc-mint. The juicy palate is packed with succulent berry fruits, suitably restrained with fine but structured tannins. There are subtle oak maturation nuances adding further complexity. Energetic, harmonious and truly varietal, this medium to full bodied wine is very drinkable. Approachable and fruit forward, Fordson Zinfandel can be enjoyed now or over the next five years.

Kalleske Fordson Zinfandel 2019 Tasting Notes from the winery

In 1853, the Kalleske vineyard and farm was established at Greenock in the Barossa’s North-West. For 97 years horses were used to work the vineyard and land. This changed in 1950 when a new type of horse-power arrived on the property, a ‘Fordson’ Major tractor. The Fordson soon became a valuable and integral part of vineyard and farm activities. Fordson Zinfandel (a.k.a. Primitivo) is a single vineyard wine that’s been grown, vintaged and matured on the Kalleske property. Vigilant grapegrowing combined with traditional winemaking and maturation in seasoned French and American oak hogsheads has resulted in a flavoursome varietal Zinfandel displaying classic structure and richness typical of the Kalleske vineyard.

GROWING SEASON

Quality from 2019 is stunning. It was a warm and extremely dry growing season with rainfall down significantly (39%), making it one of the driest years in the past century. Summer was 3 degrees warmer than average. Yields were impacted by the dry season, leading to smaller berries and bunches. Importantly quality is brilliant producing richly flavoured, intense wines.

VINEYARD

Fordson is a single vineyard Zinfandel from the Kalleske property. The handpruned vines are low-yielding and are grown in shallow, sandy loam soil over superb deep red clay.

WINEMAKING

The grapes were harvested on April 8th and pressed eight days later, with pumpovers employed twice daily whilst on skins. Following pressing the wine was matured in seasoned hogsheads for twelve months prior to bottling.

TASTING NOTES

2019 Fordson Zinfandel is deep violet in colour. The aroma is alluring with blueberry, white pepper, fresh jam, rhubarb and plum pudding. The generous palate is medium to full bodied and lavishly flavoured. Fruits are pure and intense, bright and brambly. Natural tannin is evident adding weight and structure, but certainly playing a background role. This wine is intensely varietal from start to finish, the finish being very long. Approachable and fruit forward, Fordson Zinfandel can be enjoyed now or over the next five years

“Seldom seen in Australia, Zin has the capacity for ripeness and power albeit, the disparate nature of ripening within grape clusters ensures a sweet : sour freshness. Well suited to the vanillas of American oak, this is a suave operator. satsuma plum, raspberry, candied orange zest, bramble and peppery, herbal tannins assuage the richness of the wine. The oak, too, helps corral the billowing flavours. Delicious! A fine example, best on the cool side.”

“Deep red colour with a tint of purple. The bouquet is smoky, blackberry, bitumen and graphite. The palate adds blackberry conserve, is full-bodied and supple, with richness, density and soft fleshy tannins. A whopper.”

Huon Hooke, The Real Review, August 2019

“Barossa zinfandel weighing in at only 13.5% alc. You’d not guess the alcohol from the wine’s flavour profile. It’ sweet and jammy but then it’s also fresh and there is zero heat on the finish. Indeed there’s as much boysenberry and raspberry as there is plum jam. There’s a spiciness, almost a twigginess at play here too. It’s an interesting example of the variety.”

Campbell Mattinson, Winefront, 2 November 2019
