Ruby red with black hue the nose has black plums, marshmallow, red currants, a little meaty: like a butcher's shop, with savoury notes on the back.
A very generous wine, luscious in the mouth with lovely sweetness. The richness of the nose follows through to the palate with flavours of plums and currants dominating. One of the great characteristics of Merlot is its sweetness and this wine does not disappoint. Lovely, integrated, soft tannins create a firm back palate without being over powering. A little gem!
Aged for 12 months in 10% new, 10% 1 year, 80% 2 year old French barriques.
The Story
Origin
All Gemstone Wines are made from 100% organic fruit that we have sourced from around the best wine-growing neighbourhoods of South Australia.
Winemaking
The Gemstone wines all have purity and brightness, which is a reflection of the vineyards. A simple winemaking approach was taken with the Merlot. Fermented in open fermenters for 7 days with gentle pumping over and plunging until we felt the tannins were integrated. Pressed into barrels for aging for just 12 months and then bottled without filtration or fining.
Vintage Notes
The 2013 to 2014 growing season presented us with some challenges. Adequate winter rains, a dry spring, then some unseasonal warmth and wind. The summer was warm and dry. The resulting wines from vintage 2014 are integrated, balanced and show purity of fruit.
