Alluring cherry red in colour, armoas of blueberies and cherry cola jump from the glass with an earthy nuance. The palate oozes bright red & blue fruit and spice, it is medium bodied, with vibrant acidity and ultra-fine silky tannins.
There is something so special about this wine, the varieties together show a unique synergy and harmony. One of my absolute favourites.
Tasting notes for Yangarra Noir 2020 from the Winery
Grenache is the emerging hero variety of McLaren Vale. Traditional blends of Grenache from our region generally focus on the varieties Grenache (G), Shiraz (S) and Mourvèdre (M), and thus the term “GSM”. In 2008, we began planting a few obscure Southern Rhône and Priorat varieties in pursuit of producing a traditional old-world Grenache blend. Many of these varieties, including Grenache, have a blanc (white), gris (grey) and noir (black) expression of the variety, which lead to calling this wine the Noir.
Yangarra
Yangarra is a single-vineyard estate situated in the north-east of the McLaren Vale region, South Australia. Yangarra’s combination of ancient geology, high altitude and Mediterranean climate provide the ideal growing conditions for the best grape varieties of the southern Rhône.
Vintage Summary
The 2020 growing season began with an extremely hot spring, resulting in the lowest yields on record. Luckily, as the grapes started their ripening process, the weather cooled to one of the mildest ripening seasons to date resulting in wonderful concentration of flavour, retention of natural acidity, brightness of fruit, and above all, beautiful finesse and balanced tannins. Although the devastating bushfires ravaged vast areas of Australia, McLaren Vale was fortunately spared, and our vineyards were unaffected by smoke taint.
Winemaking
Each grape variety was handled seperately until final blending to allow each variety to best exhibit its unique characteristics. Destemmed and mechanically sorted. 50% whole berries. Cold Soak. Open fermenters. 14-18 days on skins with a very gentle maceration. Wild yeast ferment. Kept on lees in 100% older French oak for 6 months. Bottled November 2020.

95 Points James Halliday - Halliday Wine Companion (2019 Vintage)
Noir indeed - this lovely light-bodied, juicy wine is a voyage of discovery by the intrepid Peter Fraser. The grapes were mechanically sorted 50% whole berries, wild-fermented, 14-16 days on skins, matured for 6 months in used French oak. A wonderfully different wine, welcoming investigation, not hiding anything. 62% grenache, 15% shiraz, 12% mourvedre, 6% carignan, 3% cinsaut and 2% counoise.
94 Points Steve Leszczynski - Qwine Reviews (2018 Vintage)
It's only April and perhaps we've seen the bargain of the year. Wickedly juicy, one glass just isn't enough. The latest addition to the Yangarra Estate range, the brand's ongoing commitment to Rhone varieties has delivered this blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Shiraz, Cinsault, Carignan and Counoise 40/21/14/12/11/2. Handpicked, 50% whole berries, wild yeast ferment with 100% old French oak for 10 months. Certified organic and biodynamic. Flirtatious and dancy, this is a wine that screams nothing but pleasure. Earthy with some funk, but it's the absolute shower of red and blackberry fruit that just oozes charm. Medium bodied, the generous flow of fruit caresses the mouth filling every crevice with ease. Super smooth with the slurp factor sky high, stop at nothing to buy as much as you can. Drink now to six years.
