Vintage Notes
In 2023, we saw the third La Nina event, resulting in the wettest coolest vintage since 2011, and perhaps one of the more challenging vintages we have seen. Although 2023 had its challenges, we saw beautiful flavours and some of the best complexity, elegance, and restraint thanks to the cool conditions and low yields.
Vineyard
The majority of fruit for our 2023 vintage of pinot noir was sourced from our vineyard in Eden Valley. The vineyard has rolling hills and diverse soil structures consisting of loamy sand with ironstone gravels and quartz. This diverse soil gives rise to complexity and depth to our grapes grown at this site, which is mirrored in this wine. The vineyard is home to ancient gums and beautiful native birds that thrive at our organic vineyard.
Winemaking/Vinification
A wet and very cool spring led to delays in ripening for our pinot noir in all vineyards. At our warmer sites pinot noir was picked in mid and late February, and April at our cooler sites. The parcels were picked, de-stemmed and then fermented separately for an average of two weeks. A cool and long fermentation enhanced the fresh fruit character of this wine. Malolactic fermentation was completed with French oak prior to bottling in August 2023. No sulphur dioxide was added at any stage.
