The EJ is Paxton Wines Flagship Shiraz, sourced from one of the oldest vineyards in McLaren Vale, and named after David Paxton’s mother and family matriarch Elizabeth Jean. A limited release wine, the EJ Shiraz is sourced from 125+ year-old vines from our Thomas Block vineyard, an exemplary Shiraz not to be missed!

Tasting Notes from the Winery - Paxton EJ Shiraz 2016

The EJ 1887 is Paxton Wines Flagship Shiraz, sourced from one of the oldest vineyards in McLaren Vale. The first release, in 2007 was 100 cases, from our 100+ year old vineyard for Elizabeth Jean Paxton, David Paxton's Mother's 100th birthday. A powerful yet graceful wine, with exceptional fruit, integrated tannins and French oak, blending heritage and elegance.

Although still very young, the wine shows classic McLaren Vale Shiraz characteristics, with an elegant, delicate front exploding with a concentration of savoury fruit, supported by full, silky tannins unique to old vine wine. An exemplary Shiraz not to be missed!

VARIETY: 100% Shiraz
100%: Organic | Biodynamic | Vegan suitable
REGION: McLaren Vale
COLOUR: Deep crimson red with purple hues
AROMA: A powerful yet graceful nose, with exceptional fruit characters and cinnamon spice from the French oak.

CELLARING: This wine can be enjoyed young, however careful cellaring for 10-30 years will be rewarded

VINIFICATION: Hand picking is the only way these grapes can be harvested. Following picking, we ferment the fruit in an open fermenter - monitoring temperature and gently hand plunging twice daily. Once pressed, we put away the pumps and gravity feed the wine into barrel. This is where the EJ rests in the 100% French Oak Barriques for 22 months. We then gravity feed the wine into tank ready for bottling. Once bottled, we cellar the EJ Shiraz for another 18 months prior to release.

Combining opulence and grace, this magnificent offering shows dark fruit richness with mixed spice, cedar, cocoa and olive notes on the nose. The palate exhibits outstanding concentration and depth as well as refinement and silky flow. It's firmly structured by fine grainy tannins ensuring it gracious evolvement. A compelling rendition. At its best: 2024 to 2043.
