A cloudy, lightly bubbling, burnt sienna colour. This Pét Nat bursts with orange bloom, magnolia, and musk stick on the nose. It follows on the palate with juicy blood orange, rockmelon rind, earthy haybale, cupboard spice, and savoury tannin grip. A nice match to a coconut prawn curry. Tasted on a Fruit Day (20 May).

Tasting notes for Ngeringa Pétillant Naturel 2020 from the Winery.

This lightly bubbly rosé has a delicious nose of exotic flowers and musk, pithy grapefruit, blood orange and citrus blossom. On the palate there is a mixed fruit salad experience that is light, refreshingly fruity, with a dry, textured finish.

Spontaneous wild fermentation in older French barrels and concrete eggs gives us this lovely natural sparkling wine.

Please note: This wine contains only 9ppm or Sulphur Dioxide, and so qualifies for our No Added Preservative/Preservative Free range.

VINTAGE NOTES

Overall 2020 produced some outstanding fruit, although not without challenges. An extremely dry winter and spring, coupled with poor flowering conditions, gave low vigour vines with an extremely low crop. Fortunately, moderate rain events in mid and late January refreshed the vines and set them up for veraison. The period leading into harvest was textbook cool, Adelaide Hills conditions. The low yields gave rise to concentrated flavors and high natural acidity.

VINEYARD

Site(s): Grapes from all 3 Ngeringa vineyard sites: Rufus, Summit and Iluma.

3 vineyard sites total 5 hectares and are on easterly and westerly aspects at the base of the Mount Barker Summit. They are part of a biodiverse 75 hectare biodynamic farm on the south-eastern edge of the Adelaide Hills. Mount Barker Summit defines these sites ranging from 330 to 420 meters of elevation. Our vineyard soils are loam over clay, with varying influences of ironstone and micaceous schist. Ngeringa has been certified biodynamic since the late 1980’s with no chemical sprays, fertilizers or insecticides applied.

WINEMAKING NOTES

The Pink Semillon and Viognier see 3 to 5 days of skin contact, while other varieties are whole bunch pressed. Fermentation begins spontaneously with wild fermentation in older French barrels and concrete eggs. The Pet Nat is estate bottled with around 13g/L residual sugar and allowed to ferment through in bottle to give us a lightly bubbly wine.

No enzymes, no fining, no filtration.

2018 Vintage Reviews

93 points - winefront.com.au

Fruit salad of varieties here, but that ain’t the point, it’s bright, fizzy, delicious that’s the motif. From biodynamic vines. I’m cheering on the increasing number of pet nats emerging from all sorts of producers across Australia; this one came before many on the new wave. The 2018 is to be released soonish, the 2017 if still in market is also great.

Fizzy, lively, juicy, bright and so easy to drink. Fun, festive pink colour, blasting from the glass with fruity scents, the wine overall has an almost Passiona soft drink feel to it but decidedly dry, and it’s spicy and chalky in texture too. Far out, this has smashable written all over it. Exciting thing this, and of the style it is an excellent example.
