Kalleske Parallax Grenache: Tasting Notes
WINE STYLE → Bright Red-Fruit & Fresh
A light-bodied, early-picked Barossa Grenache with fragrance, freshness and a more lifted profile than the estate’s richer old-vine expression. Floral notes, ripe strawberries, fresh rosemary, rhubarb, a whisper of earth and subtle spice lead the aromatics. The palate is light, juicy and strikingly pure, carrying bright berry fruit with an undercurrent of savouriness. Lightly chalky tannins provide a fine backbone, while slatey minerality runs through the wine and keeps the finish long, energetic and precise.

Tasting Notes
Parallax takes Grenache in a fresher, more lifted direction than the richer old-vine model. The aroma is all floral notes, ripe strawberries, fresh rosemary, rhubarb, a hint of earth and subtle spice. On the palate it is light-bodied but generously flavoured, with vivid berry fruit and a savoury edge that stops it from reading as simple. Lightly chalky tannins give the wine shape, and slatey minerality carries through to a long, energetic finish. It is a charming wine, but also a serious example of how Grenache can work when picked earlier.
Winemaking
Kalleske describes Parallax as Grenache picked two to three weeks earlier than normal, fermented on stalks and handled with minimal maturation. Wild yeast fermentation is part of the style, and the low-oak, low-intervention approach is designed to highlight purity, freshness and savoury detail rather than richness or barrel weight. The result is a neoteric take on Barossa Grenache that still clearly speaks of the variety.
Vineyard & Vintage
The current release is 2025 and comes from the Kalleske estate at Greenock in the Barossa Valley. The winery frames Parallax as a deliberate shift in perspective: same grape, different picking point and different interpretation. By harvesting earlier and leaning into freshness, the fruit profile moves toward strawberry, rhubarb and herb notes rather than the darker, sweeter spectrum Grenache often shows at full late-season ripeness. The recommended drinking window is now to five years.
Why We Love It
This is a strong alternative for drinkers who like Grenache but want less weight and more energy. It keeps the perfume and generosity of the grape, but the earlier picking, stalk influence and minimal maturation bring extra lift and savoury definition. It is a very convincing example of modern Barossa Grenache without losing site character.
Food Pairing
The bright fruit, modest tannin and savoury edge make this a flexible match for lighter meat dishes, chargrilled vegetables and herb-driven cooking. It works particularly well with food where freshness matters as much as flavour. Try matching this wine with →

Mood or occasion to match this wine…
A very good bottle for lunch, shared plates and nights when you want a red with plenty of flavour but less weight than a bigger Barossa style.
Cellaring
The winery recommends drinking it now or over the next five years. It is built more around freshness and charm than long-term development, so it makes sense to enjoy it while the energy and purity are most vivid.
Producer
Kalleske is a seventh-generation family estate at Greenock in the Barossa Valley, farming continuously since 1853. The vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic, and all fruit is estate grown. Parallax shows the estate’s willingness to experiment within that traditional framework. Rather than treating Grenache as a late-picked, richer red by default, Kalleske has shifted the picking point and the cellar approach to show a fresher side of the variety. It still comes from the same family farm and the same Barossa context, but the result is deliberately more energetic and savoury.

FAQ
What does Kalleske Parallax Grenache taste like?
It shows floral lift, ripe strawberries, rosemary, rhubarb, earth and subtle spice. The palate is light, juicy and pure, with bright berry fruit, a savoury edge, lightly chalky tannins and slatey minerality.
Is this wine dry?
Yes, it is a dry red wine. The fruit is vivid and expressive, but the finish stays dry and savoury rather than sweet.
How full-bodied is it?
This sits at the lighter end of the red spectrum. It is generously flavoured, but the overall style is light-bodied and energetic rather than rich or weighty.
Does it need decanting?
No long decant is needed. A quick pour into a glass or brief splash in a small decanter is enough if you want the aromatics to open a little more.
What temperature and glassware work best?
Serve it slightly cooler than a bigger red, around 14–16°C, in a medium red wine glass. That helps emphasise the freshness, perfume and savoury detail.
Can this wine be cellared?
Yes, but only over the short term. The winery recommends drinking it now to five years, which matches its fresh, early-picked style.
Does this wine contain preservatives or sulphites?
It is not a No Added Preservative wine, so it does contain sulphites. Some occur naturally during fermentation, and certified organic and biodynamic wines are made under lower permitted sulphite levels than conventional wines.
Is this wine vegan friendly?
Yes, it is listed as vegan suitable. It is also certified organic and certified biodynamic.
What food works best with this wine?
It works well with grilled chicken, pork, charred vegetables and lighter Mediterranean-style dishes. Foods that suit a fresh, lightly tannic red are the best match.
Who is this wine likely to suit?
It will suit drinkers who enjoy Grenache with freshness, perfume and savoury detail rather than full-bodied richness. If you like lighter reds or more modern, early-picked Grenache, this is a strong fit.
