Kalleske JMK VP Shiraz (Fortified) 375ml: Tasting Notes
WINE STYLE → Luscious dessert finish
A luscious fortified Shiraz with deep colour, dense dark fruit and a refined sweet finish. Plum jam, ripe figs, dark cherry, heritage rose florals, clove spice, toffee and brandied fruit cake lead the aromatics. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with natural grape sweetness held in check by fine tannins, integrated grape spirit and a clean, dry line through the finish. It is opulent without becoming heavy, and the balance between sweetness, fruit and structure is what makes it particularly convincing.

Tasting Notes
JMK VP opens with plum jam, ripe figs, dark cherry, heritage rose florals, clove spice, toffee and brandied fruit cake. The palate is rich, lush and full-bodied, carrying dark sweet fruit and integrated spirit with surprising freshness through the line. Natural grape sweetness is present, but it is balanced by fine tannins and a dry, refreshing finish rather than becoming syrupy. It is a fortified style with plenty of flavour and warmth, but it keeps shape and detail all the way through.
Winemaking
The grapes were harvested on 17 March and fermented in an open-top fermenter with hand pump-overs twice daily. Fermentation was monitored closely and, after five days, grape spirit was added to arrest fermentation and retain natural grape sweetness. A combination of young and old brandy spirit, up to 23 years old, was used for extra complexity. The wine was then pressed off skins after 21 days and matured in well-seasoned hogsheads for four months, with only the best barrels selected for bottling.
Vineyard & Vintage
JMK is sourced from select blocks on the Kalleske family vineyard at Greenock in the north-western Barossa Valley. The site is planted in shallow sandy loam over deep red clay and limestone, a proven combination for concentrated Shiraz. The current winery notes describe the season as exemplary, with mild conditions, healthy canopies and dry mild-warm days through vintage allowing even, steady ripening. That long, balanced season shows in the wine’s depth of flavour and strong natural structure.
Why We Love It
This is a fortified Shiraz with proper detail, not just sweetness and spirit. The fruit is bright, the sweetness is controlled and the finish stays dry enough to keep it composed. The dedication to John Malcolm Kalleske also gives it a genuine sense of place and family continuity, which suits a wine made in this more traditional style.
Food Pairing
This style works best with rich, sweet or savoury dishes that can match its depth and sweetness. Chocolate desserts, blue cheese and fruit-based tarts are all strong options, and it also works as a slow-sipping after-dinner wine on its own. Try matching this wine with →

Mood or occasion to match this wine…
A good bottle for after dinner, cooler nights and occasions where a small pour of something richer and more traditional makes more sense than opening another table red.
Cellaring
JMK can be enjoyed now, but it also has a long future ahead of it in bottle. The winery recommends drinking it now or after a decade or more, and a 1–20+ year window is realistic under sound storage conditions.
Producer
Kalleske is a seventh-generation family estate at Greenock in the Barossa Valley, farming continuously since 1853. The estate has been certified organic and biodynamic since 1998, and all fruit is estate grown. Kalleske’s fortified wines sit within the same broader philosophy as the table wines: vineyard-first farming, traditional methods and minimal unnecessary handling. JMK is particularly personal within the range, dedicated to fifth-generation grapegrower John Malcolm Kalleske, who tended the family vineyards for more than fifty years and hand pruned and harvested the blocks for this wine.

FAQ
What does Kalleske JMK VP Shiraz taste like?
It is a luscious fortified Shiraz with plum jam, ripe figs, dark cherry, toffee, clove spice and brandied fruit cake. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with natural grape sweetness balanced by fine tannins and a long, dry finish.
What does VP mean in fortified wine?
VP refers to vintage port style, though in Australia these wines are often described more generally as fortified Shiraz or vintage fortified wine. The idea is a rich, sweet fortified wine made from a single vintage, with spirit added during fermentation to retain natural grape sweetness.
Is this wine sweet?
Yes, it has clear sweetness from retained natural grape sugar. Even so, it is not cloying, because the tannin, spirit and dry finish keep the wine in balance.
How full-bodied is it?
This is a full-bodied fortified red with plenty of flavour and weight. It is richer and more concentrated than a table Shiraz, but still keeps brightness through the fruit.
Should I decant it?
It does not need a full decant in the way a young dry red does, but a little air in the glass helps. Pouring it 10 to 15 minutes before drinking will allow the aromatics to open.
What temperature and glassware work best?
Serve it slightly cool, around 14–16°C, in a small fortified wine glass or a smaller white wine glass. Too warm and the spirit becomes more noticeable than the fruit.
Can this wine be cellared?
Yes. The winery notes it can be enjoyed now or after a decade or more, and it has the structure to age for many years under good storage conditions.
Does this wine contain preservatives or sulphites?
It is not a No Added Preservative wine, so it does contain sulphites. Some occur naturally during fermentation, and certified organic and biodynamic wines are made under lower permitted sulphite levels than conventional wines.
Is this wine vegan friendly?
Yes, it is listed as vegan suitable. It is also certified organic and certified biodynamic.
What food works best with this wine?
It works well with dark chocolate desserts, fruit tarts, blue cheese and roasted nuts. It is also very good on its own as an after-dinner wine.
Who is this wine likely to suit?
It will suit drinkers who enjoy vintage fortified reds, richer dessert wines and traditional Barossa styles with sweetness, fruit depth and spirit complexity. If you like VP-style fortified Shiraz, this sits squarely in that space.
