Kalleske Elenore Semillon: Tasting Notes

WINE STYLE → Structured & grippy

A medium-bodied old-vine Semillon with freshness, texture and more palate shape than the variety often gets credit for. Fresh-cut hay, pear, nectarine, lime citrus and a gentle hint of nutty oak lead the aromatics. The palate is vibrant and layered, with juicy fruit at the core, a subtle creamy thread through the middle and lively natural acidity giving the wine drive. Fine grip on the finish adds structure and keeps the wine feeling composed rather than soft. It is a balanced, quietly serious white with good detail.

Tasting Notes

Elenore Semillon 2024 immediately shows fresh-cut hay, pear, nectarine, lime citrus and a gentle nutty oak note. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant, with juicy fruit first, followed by a touch of creaminess weaving through the lively acidity. Oak is subtle and understated, bringing spice and softness rather than obvious flavour. The finish is long and flavoursome, with a fine grip that gives the wine added shape and keeps all the elements in balance.

Winemaking

The grapes were harvested on 4 March, pressed, and the juice was briefly settled before racking to fermentation. The wine was entirely wild fermented, with portions of the ferment taking place in new French oak hogsheads, concrete egg tank and stainless steel tank. Partial lees stirring was used after fermentation for added texture and complexity. After nine months maturation in these vessels, the wine was blended and bottled. That trio of oak, concrete and stainless is a key part of the style, bringing richness, complexity and freshness in measured proportion.

Vineyard & Vintage

Elenore comes from a single vineyard of old-vine Semillon on the Kalleske property at Greenock, planted in 1980. These low-yielding vines sit in shallow sand over clay subsoil, one of the older surviving Semillon sites in the Barossa. The 2024 season was described by Kalleske as excellent, with drier and slightly warmer winter and spring conditions leading to earlier development, followed by average summer temperatures, timely rainfall and no extreme heat. That balanced season produced fruit of superb quality with steady ripening through mid-autumn.

Why We Love It

This is a more layered take on Semillon than a simple stainless-steel style. The fruit is bright, but the ferment in oak, concrete and steel gives the wine more texture and a broader palate shape. It remains controlled and fresh, which is what makes it especially useful for drinkers who like white wines with both energy and substance.

Food Pairing

The balance of lively acidity, subtle creaminess and fine grip makes Elenore very flexible with food. It works well with roast chicken, seafood in butter or cream, and vegetable dishes that carry some texture or nutty elements. Try matching this wine with →

Mood or occasion to match this wine…

A useful bottle for roast chicken lunches, seafood dinners and times when a crisp white feels too simple but a richer oaked style would be too much.

Cellaring

Kalleske says Elenore drinks well now and will reward careful cellaring for five to ten years. The old-vine fruit, lively acidity and measured oak support that window well.

Producer

Kalleske is a seventh-generation family estate at Greenock in the north-western Barossa Valley, farming continuously since 1853. The vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic, and all fruit is estate grown. Elenore is named after Johanne ‘Elenore’ Kalleske, daughter of Eduard and Rosina, born on the family farm in 1865. The wine itself reflects a practical but thoughtful Kalleske approach: old-vine estate fruit, wild fermentation, maturation across oak, concrete and stainless steel, and just enough lees work to build texture without losing clarity.

FAQ

What does Kalleske Elenore Semillon taste like?

It shows fresh-cut hay, pear, nectarine, lime citrus and a gentle nutty oak note. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant, with juicy fruit, subtle creaminess, lively acidity and a long, flavoursome finish.

Is this wine dry?

Yes, it is a dry white wine. The residual sugar sits at about 2 g/L, which reads firmly dry, and the lively acidity keeps the finish precise.

How full-bodied is it?

This sits in the medium-bodied range. It has more shape and texture than a very lean Semillon, but it is not broad or heavy.

Does it need decanting?

It does not require decanting, but a little air in the glass helps the nutty oak and creamy notes show more clearly. It is already very approachable on release.

What temperature and glassware work best?

Serve it at around 9–11°C in a medium white wine glass. Slightly warmer service lets the texture and oak detail emerge more fully.

Can this wine be cellared?

Yes. Kalleske recommends a cellaring window of five to ten years, and that fits the wine’s old-vine fruit, acidity and layered structure.

Does this wine contain preservatives or sulphites?

It is not a No Added Preservative wine, so it does contain sulphites. Some occur naturally during fermentation, and certified organic and biodynamic wines are made under lower permitted sulphite levels than conventional wines.

Is this wine vegan friendly?

Yes, it is listed as vegan suitable. It is also certified organic and certified biodynamic.

What food works best with this wine?

It works well with roast chicken, grilled or butter-based fish dishes, creamy vegetable bakes and foods with a little richness. The acidity and fine grip help it carry more than a very simple white style.

Who is this wine likely to suit?

It will suit drinkers who enjoy Semillon with more texture and structure than the leanest examples. If you like white wines that balance freshness with subtle oak and palate weight, this is a strong fit.
