Thistle Hill is situated on the Hill End Rd side of Mudgee, which is the cooler side of the appellation. Started in the early 1970's Thistle Hill has been considered one of the top estates in Mudgee offering some of the region's most elegant and sophisticated wine offerings.
The Estate is Certified Organic and has been 'pesticide free' in its farming and production since conception almost 40 years ago. Thistle Hill also now owns the famed Erudgere Vineyard, which is directly adjacent. This vineyard was previously known for producing Shiraz and Cabernet for Rosemont's Mountain Blue Premium line. This vineyard has been approved Organic IC by NASAA and is slated to be Certified Organic by 2012. Cabernet and Riesling are the flagship varietals with Chardonnay and Shiraz also being top offerings, as well as a small block of Pinot Noir.
The Estate sits at 600 meters above sea level with most of the blocks facing South East and down sloped. The soil is red soil with quartz and granite. There are approximately 80 acres under vine with another 200 acres available to grow. Thistle Hill is a 4.5 of 5 Star rating from James Halliday in the 2011 Wine Companion as well as a multi-award winner at several wine shows across Australia with multiple 'Golds' and 'Best In Shows'. Winner of the Organic Wine of the year in 2009 for the 2009 Thistle Hill Estate Riesling. Sydney Morning Herald, Top 12 Wineries in NSW, Feb 2011.
