Peter Comisel & Dot Hollow established Sandy Farm Vineyard in 1988. Peter is a viticulture graduate & self educated winemaker with a particular fondness for Pinot Noir. He is a great questioner of "conventional practice" and employs a maverick approach to all aspects of the wine business. Aside from viticulture, winemaking & marketing, Dot brings an artistic bent to the business including filmmaking & photography.
With lots of hard work over the last 25+ years they have created a loyal following of consumers who appreciate their quality small scale preservative & chemical free wines. Wines are extensively tested by the Australian Wine Research Institute located in Adelaide to prove their "chemical free" status. This is Australia’s premier testing Institute. The vineyard is at a height of 610 metres above sea level and is definitely in the cool climate category for Australian vineyards. The vines were planted in 1988-89 and in total there are six acres, comprising Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The vines grow on slopes with a northerly and westerly aspect. The soil structure is basically a clay structure over sandstone shale. The vines are non-irrigated, low yielding, tightly pruned and self-sustaining. Picking for the Pinot Noir would generally occur late April early May, while the Cabernets are picked early to late May.
The wines available to buy are a Cabernet Merlot, a Pinot Noir and just recently they have added Shiraz to their portfolio. All wine is matured in a mixture of French Oak and American Oak for between 12 and 18 months. All wines are hand picked, hand plunged and basket pressed.
