Roundtable was conceived by winemaker Nick Bickford as a toast to the kitchen table. The kitchen table filled with friends and good food is where we really sort things out. Nowdays it can be luxury enough to make space for these times, so we think a damn good table wine is a necessity.
Nick's influences and experience are plentiful and varied. Nick's, great great grandfather, William Bickford, was the founder of the city of Adelaide's first apothecary and blender of many now famous beverages. William, with a horse and cart, travelled all over South Australia and 'at times went as far as Wentworth and Victoria' dispensing his goods. The youngster Nick, spent his formative years at a round kitchen table in the cradle of the South Australian town of McLaren Vale's heady early years.
Sparked from the fun of wine, Nick discovered its romance. Fuelled by the inspiring characters of “The Vale” and the legendary red stripe flagon - a cheap bushvine Grenache Shiraz - Nick then went on to studying winemaking and grapegrowing at Roseworthy Ag College for a few years. He then bolted to California and Oregon. After completing a number of vintages with the then Ch. Lafite, partnered Carmenet , he returned to Australia for experience in cool-climate technique in prominent Victorian boutique wineries. The call overseas came again, this time to make the best table wines possible in regions from Provence, to Porto Alegre, Brazil and Moldova.<br
One of his inspirations in making organic wine comes back to the kitchen table and his enjoyment of cooking with organically grown foods. So, dissatisfied with the fruit quality produced by some conventionally grown vineyards and perplexed by the lack of organic wine on the market, Nick decided to create Roundtable.
