Lowe Wines is a small to medium sized winegrower based in Mudgee NSW and drawing grapes from vineyards in the central west, principally Mudgee & Orange.
The winery, now a certified organic facility, specialises in small batch winemaking using innovative techniques. The Mudgee vineyards are untrellised, unirrigated and certified organic. They produce lower yields of distinctively individual grapes; one of four flag ship varieties being Zinfandel. They are leading the field with practical sustainable management in their vineyards and across the farm.
David Lowe is the principal of the company and he has been working in the wine industry since the age of 15. He qualified with a winemaking degree from Roseworthy College in 1979 having started his career at Rothbury Estate in 1978 where he rose to become chief winemaker and group vineyard manger. During this period Rothbury Estate was an extremely high profile Hunter Valley company under the chairman Len Evans. David has spent five vintages in Bordeaux, France as a flying winemaker.
"I've only ever wanted to be a winemaker. I've been doing it now for 35 years - that's a good thing! I still love it. It's what gets me up in the morning, puts a smile on my face and provides the drive to keep doing it better and better.
I want to take these grapes that I grow, get them in a bottle with as little intervention as possible and get them to you with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of excellence. Making great wine in a good year from lovely vineyards is easy. There are also years where it's tough for all in the industry, and as an organic grower and maker we have few weapons; this is when age and experience also helps." David Lowe
