It has been said that a farmer doesn't choose his land, the land chooses the farmer, and this certainly seems to be the case for Roy Meyer. In 1987, Roy and his land began their partnership. Roy had grown up on a farm where his father taught him the natural ways to care for the land, and it was second-nature for Roy to continue these practices when he decided to plant his vineyard. Roy treats his land with respect, producing his wine under the guidelines of organic farming.

Roy's land looks out over the beautiful Broke-Fordwich Valley, a part of the Hunter Valley, inland from the East-coast of Australia. He has planted a variety of grapes including the well-known Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot, and some lesser-known varieties including Chambourcin and Cabernet Franc. The first wines were produced in 1994, and were received with acclaim.

The "Louis-Laval" name comes from his mother's (Etty Ida Mary Meyer) maiden name, who Roy credits as his silent partner through the whole adventure, until her passing in 2002.

Roy's experience now extends outside the farm gate. His abilities as a wine maker are sought by other grape growers in the area, and surely the greatest accolade is the that his wines are sold out each year, well before next precious fruit are ready to harvest.
