Leland Estate is one of the oldest vineyards, albeit small (2.5 hectares), in the Adelaide Hills. It is located between Lenswood and Lobethal on the north side of the original Neudorf settlement, 40km east of Adelaide. The wines are grown and made by Robb Cootes, Master of Science and former Yalumba senior winemaker. He is firmly of the belief that wine quality is derived from better quality grapes rather than chemical or microbiological manipulation of wine. This philosophy underpins Leland Estate. The vines were planted in November 1986 on a north-easterly slope, in well-drained red brown earth, 500 metres above sea level. Shoot positioning, organic fertilisers and under vine mulching are undertaken to encourage maximum quality potential.
