From its inception in 1995 the Holmes family vineyard has been tended organically without the use of synthetic fertilisers, fungicides, herbicides or insecticides. It is the first vineyard in the South Island to have been developed organically and is one of a tiny band of fully certified organic vineyards in New Zealand.

The growing and winemaking process is certified by Bio-Gro New Zealand in compliance with stringent organic standards. To achieve these standards means that vines take longer to come into full production and results in lower yields than conventional vineyards. The Holmes family commitment to organic methods has created a unique terroir within a region renowned for high quality wine.

The Holmes partnership now sell wines under the "Holmes" label as well as the "Richmond Plains" label. New Zealand's Nelson region is one of the New World's finest cool-climate, wine producing areas. The region's extended summer sunshine hours and cold, crisp winters combine with the free-draining soils of the Waimea Plains to create ideal grape growing conditions. This temperate climate, moderated by the nearby Western Ranges and sea breezes of Tasman Bay, is perfect for elegant white wines and well-structured, medium- weight reds.
