The founder of Etain is Margaret River enthusiast, Conor Lagan. Conor has lived and worked in the Margaret River region for the last 33 years. The Etain label is the culmination of his understanding and passion for Western Australian wine.

Etain, the horse goddess, is derived from Gaelic mythology. Representing birth and rebirth, the symbolism of Etain, extends to wine, winemaking and to Conor Lagan himself: “from my earliest years in Ireland to my adult life in Australia, from the beginnings of my family vineyard to the creation of my own label”. Conor was born in Limerick City, Ireland, to a young, Catholic woman and adopted by John and Eithne Lagan. The Lagan''s were essentially a family of doctors: Conor''s parents are both doctors and his grandfather and three uncles, also doctors. In 1968, Conor''s Mother organised a professional appointment for 12 months in Australia -an appointment which has continued to this very day. An undiscovered Margaret River was chosen because 'it was green and rained a lot and would remind you of Ireland'.

The Lagans began their life as vignerons in 1977, planting their first vines on land 5 minutes from the township of Margaret River. From this initial planting, Chateau Xanadu was born and continued to grow over the next 20 years. A 25 year old Conor with winemaking degree in hand introduced a program of expansion which saw Chateau Xanadu acknowledged as one of the region's leading winemaking estates. Today, the cycle starts again with Conor's development of the Etain label.

All fruit for the Etain label is sourced from premium vineyards throughout Western Australia with vineyard selection and winemaking overseen by Conor. His philosophy is based upon “natural selection”: choosing fruit and styles that are best suited to the region and are destined to survive in the marketplace. A Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Merlot from Margaret River are produced under the Etain label together with a Riesling from Frankland River.
