Not a Moscato, and not exactly a dessert wine, so what is it? All the richest character of a late harvest Semillon but lighter and very sippable with cheese or nibbles before dinner, or with a spicy Thai main, or with cheese after a meal.

2013 Vintage Notes

The fruit lingered on the vines in a hot dry autumn until it reached 17 beaume and didnt want to go any further, if there was going to be any juice left at all. Fermented to about 10 percent alcohol, retaining the remainder of the sugars as natural sweetness.

We compare it with the sweet whites of the South of France known as “Vin Doux Naturel” – naturally sweet wines – which are not sweetened with sugar or concentrate.

This wine was made at Tom’s Waterhole Winery, by our friends Graham and Jan Kerr. We went halves in the wine, and got about a pallet each. The wine itself is made from our own organic fruit, but as the winery is not certified due to its small size, the wine does not bear organic certification.

The Vineyards

Block 9 Semillon, comprising 1,600 vines planted on own roots on shallow sandy quartzy clay. A hungry variety which performs best in or following wet years, but struggles during drought. We planted Semillon as it is suited to warmer climates, retails lovely citrussy acidity later than Chardonnay, and blends well with Chardonnay to make better table and sparkling wine.
