Winery/Brand: Merops

Merops Ornatus is the scientific name of the rainbow bird, the rather attractive specimen on the front of the Merops label. The wine too is an offbeat blend that couples together a whole raft of varieties to make an intriguing savoury wine of some style. The key to the appeal of this red though is all about the fine (certified organic) grapes at the core, proving once again that it's all made in the vineyard.
From the 2009 vintage the vineyard has full certification with the National Association of Sustainable Agriculture of Australia. (NASAA) Organic Certification

The Story

Estate grown organic grapes and traditional winemaking blending 5% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 55% Merlot aged in French Oak has produced a complex medium to full bodied wine with smooth texture. Bouquet: Complex mulberry, violets, leather, graphite. Palate: Rich, blackcurrants, grainy tannins some herbal elements, balanced and long.

This is a blend of Cabernet franc and Merlot that I guess takes something from the Right Bank of Bordeaux. Beautiful scented aromas with lifted violets and mulberry notes. The palate is medium bodied with a thoroughly seamless integration of fruit oak and tannin. Just beautiful. Ray Jordan
