The Story

2010 Vintage: In 2009 we had conditions that suited our style of winemaking perfectly and it was always going to be a difficult vintage to follow. However 2010 delivered in spades with the Shiraz actually producing what we consider to be higher quality wine than that of 2009. The 2009 wines are bright, fresh and ‘red’ while the 2010 wines tend to be dark, earthy and ‘purple’. The main difference between the two vintages is that the pH’s were much higher in 2010 than in 2009. These two vintages display one of the many reasons why we love wine; two vintages of amazing quality, from the same vineyards and the same grape variety but producing wines with completely different profiles.

Vineyard: the Izway Home Block is planted on heavy red clay and loose gravel and is organically farmed by Craig. It produces small berries and bunches and has great tannin structure. There are two distinct sections of the vineyard that we label the ‘Short Rows’ and the ‘Long Rows’ and the 2010 Izway Izway Shiraz was sourced from the ‘Long Rows’. The vineyard was completely dry grown in 2010 and the resulting wine has an earthy, herbal edge and rich pallet weight. This wine is made to deliver an insight into what we see as winemakers; it is pure and natural and with no preservative added it is a perfect expression of the

“Organic, with no sulphur added, some yeast put in towards the end of ferment, and the superb quality of the fruit resulting in a lovely, unforced, spicy and balanced wine”. Max Allen via Twitter March 2011
